I think you are gonna get alot of flack for that loud pipes save lives comment here.

I wanted louder pipes but it was for my own personal enjoyment. I went that route and I am chaging them again for quieter ones. Stil think a loud obnoxious horn and safe riding skill saves alot more lives and ears than loud pipes do.

400 miles of these loud pipes and the splitting headache I have is telling me to change back to quiet pipes.

I know there is a manufacturer that gives the best of both worlds. Loud pipes when wanted and flip the switch and the pipes turn quiet again, but not sure they are made for our models and in a respectable 0rice range.

I believe loud pipes are very rarely needed. I do not believe that they save lives since very rarely can a car figure out where they are coming from unless they are right next to them. Especially the way the cars are built today with all of the sound proofing.
One of the P O's of my GL1500 had put Hollywood mufflers on my wing. These mufflers sound good now but when I bought the wing it sounded like a 125 under the seat area. So hearing the stereo was not good. I found that the silencers were put in back ward and it took double stacking them to lower the tone and have the sound from the pipes soming out behind us while we ride.
Also the power and mileage came up with the proper back pressure being there now. Of coarse if someone wanted to they could probably find the right combination of jet size in the carburetors as well as cams and timing wheels. I put the 4 degree wheel on and further found more power and better mileage.
Gold wings are not supposed to be heard. Gold Wings should be seen.
Remember Harley riders are the ones that think they have to wake the dead when their bikes are not riding in the back of pick up trucks. Its that old hound dog thing. Got to mark their territory and love to ride in the back of pick up trucks.
Please don't get me wrong. I now people who love their Harley's and they are always asking if I have my sowing machine running yet when we start to ride. My brother included who won't ride anything but a Harley.

My buddy spent $1200 putting loud pipes on his 1500. After three weeks and 4,000 miles of highway riding he reinstaled his original "sewing machine" pipes.

Can you explain the "4 degree wheel", and how it helped?

I think the harley ribbing is funnybut what about the new or regular breed of harley owners that ride thier machines quiet and safe.
Many of them are members of this site. I hope they know what you are reffering too when you say those harley riders.
My Buddy is a harley Owner, My father in law is a harley biker. Loud pipes bike running like crap and leaking all oiver the place. If my fund would allow, I would have a ROAD KING, A honda Gl1500 and Valkyrie and a Dirt Bike.
I would also like to rent a GSXR with full gear and see what a full wheelie feels like

The curious thing about loud pipes is that you only really hear them at their best when it's ticking over or riding slowly in traffic. Once you are on the move much of the racket is blown away in your slipstream and annoying the heck out of all in your wake behind you. People in front of you don't always equate the sound to your particular machine unless they are beside you or behind you. Anyway most people aren't on the ball at all really. They are either playing with their cell phone and checking their email, twiddling with the stereo knobs, messin' with their hair or eating some golden arches. You just have to read their minds, that's all. Here in BC they have introduced a new law and a fine for loud and noisy exhausts.

I also don't belive that loud pipes save lives, they do however wake up the Lawmakers. The funniest thing about guys with the loud pipes is half of them wear earplugs so they can't hear thier own bike. Now wearing earplugs on a bike that is too loud to allow the rider to hear other traffic has to a bigger saftey concern that the old "loud pipes save lives "B.S., I ride with a guy who has incredibley loud pipes, to the point I will not allow him to rides in front of me cause I can't hear myself think if he's ahead. And because of his earplugs, we can't talk at stoplights to decide where to go next.
Not that I like new resticting laws, but why can bikes run straight pipes and I can't run a performance can on my sled nor can I have straight pipes on my truck????

I guess I should apologize to any and all Harley riders that I may have offended. My reference to Harley riders was to the few that seem to think that everyone with in a mile of them should have to hear them. And yes I to remember when I had to put silencer on my dirt bike since I got a ticket riding out in the dessert with a tuned pipe. Man I used to love that Hodaka for hill climbing. Anyway to any of those riders who have these great machines that don't wake up the dead I apologize. I really wish those 2 that ride past my house at 2 AM every morning put put the stock mufflers back on.
As for the 4 degree wheel. This is the trigger wheel that I put on when I replaced the timing belts. This trigger wheel got rid of the hesitation when you first stat to throttle up from idle just like I had read from post on this site said it would. My 94 GL1500 went from 28 MPG city to 30 MPG, from 32 MPG HWY to 35- 38 MPG depending on how fast we are riding. Also run SEA FOAM about every 10 tanks of fuel. The guys down at Wing Stuff that did a great job rebuilding my front forks said this is one of the best running 1500's they know of. This GL1500 now has over 79,000 miles on it and from what I under stand this is just broken in.
Hope to have the pleasure to ride with some of you some day.

"Loud pipes just anoy The general public."

AND other riders who have to ride behind them and listen to their annoying pipes! I know we could pass MOST, if not all, of them but I think when riding with a group everyone should get a chance to lead and 'blowing away the leader at the time; is 'bad form'! ;)

Hello ut1w7b,Don't listen to these " Old Fogey's " :cooldevil: There is a local Goldwing shop here and the owner and Head mechanic has put Reinhart pipes on his GL1500 and it sounds great... And I know for a " FACT " that louder pipes ( Louder not Obnoxious) will save your butt in " CITY " riding. Almosteveryday I have to Rap my throttle when some young chic on the phone is driving right into me and it scares the crap out of them and I love it , Do what you want, It's your bike besides Goldwings sound great with louder pipes :action:

Get the pipes and save your life...

the 1500s muffler pipes are held in place by a clamp and a bolt... all you gotta do is remove them, get a muffler shop to cut a set of straight pipes and weld an ear to bolt them and ull have an sport car sound like.

R Knop
I bought my trigger wheel of Ebay.
There is one listed now. Type in 190314665081 and you will see where to get one.
It only has 23 hours left and this the same guy I bought mine from.
Mine will get installed on monday along with new timing belts.

Couldn't you install a Stebel horn for a lot less money and tap it when needed? Then we wouldn't be annoying people when we didn't need the sound. Or is there something about scaring the crap out of people that I'm missing here? Loud pipes saving lives is open to debate (I know, I know), but that fact that they annoy and alienate folks to bikes is a given.

Why on earth would we want to do that?
