I believe loud pipes are very rarely needed. I do not believe that they save lives since very rarely can a car figure out where they are coming from unless they are right next to them. Especially the way the cars are built today with all of the sound proofing.
One of the P O's of my GL1500 had put Hollywood mufflers on my wing. These mufflers sound good now but when I bought the wing it sounded like a 125 under the seat area. So hearing the stereo was not good. I found that the silencers were put in back ward and it took double stacking them to lower the tone and have the sound from the pipes soming out behind us while we ride.
Also the power and mileage came up with the proper back pressure being there now. Of coarse if someone wanted to they could probably find the right combination of jet size in the carburetors as well as cams and timing wheels. I put the 4 degree wheel on and further found more power and better mileage.
Gold wings are not supposed to be heard. Gold Wings should be seen.
Remember Harley riders are the ones that think they have to wake the dead when their bikes are not riding in the back of pick up trucks. Its that old hound dog thing. Got to mark their territory and love to ride in the back of pick up trucks.
Please don't get me wrong. I now people who love their Harley's and they are always asking if I have my sowing machine running yet when we start to ride. My brother included who won't ride anything but a Harley.

I guess I should apologize to any and all Harley riders that I may have offended. My reference to Harley riders was to the few that seem to think that everyone with in a mile of them should have to hear them. And yes I to remember when I had to put silencer on my dirt bike since I got a ticket riding out in the dessert with a tuned pipe. Man I used to love that Hodaka for hill climbing. Anyway to any of those riders who have these great machines that don't wake up the dead I apologize. I really wish those 2 that ride past my house at 2 AM every morning put put the stock mufflers back on.
As for the 4 degree wheel. This is the trigger wheel that I put on when I replaced the timing belts. This trigger wheel got rid of the hesitation when you first stat to throttle up from idle just like I had read from post on this site said it would. My 94 GL1500 went from 28 MPG city to 30 MPG, from 32 MPG HWY to 35- 38 MPG depending on how fast we are riding. Also run SEA FOAM about every 10 tanks of fuel. The guys down at Wing Stuff that did a great job rebuilding my front forks said this is one of the best running 1500's they know of. This GL1500 now has over 79,000 miles on it and from what I under stand this is just broken in.
Hope to have the pleasure to ride with some of you some day.
