louder pipes on my 1989 1500

I would like to put louder pipes on my 1989 1500. I believe louder pipes save lives. what is the best way to do this with out hurting performance.

Just an idea.....
What about all the owners with modified pipes post a small vid or sound file so that others can listen and make thier minds up whether the modification is for them or not?

I have TBR six/sixes on my Valk, and I love the sound they make.
I also drilled out the rear baffles on the pipes of my SuperMagna just so the bike could be heard.
I swear, it was ghostly silent in stock form.
(Please excuse the poor quality on this file. It was done with a cheapo camera a few years ago)

OK, all/most of the sound goes 'backwards' when riding at highway speeds, that I won't disagree with,so those behind will hear it........but.....if you are on a group ride, don't be peeved if they ask you to run at the back...:action::cheeky1::cheeky1:

My buddy insists on 'leading from the rear'....:D, scared of making a wrong turn and getting ribbed for it........he prefers to be the 'ribber'.
He moaned at me one day about the sound of my bike. (Now there is usually only two of us out there on trips.) I told him to lead from the front, or quit griping!!!
He don't moanany more, and he's still riding behind me. He just turned up the volume on that mobile disco he rides....:cheeky1::cheeky1::cheeky1:

Bottom line..........do what you want to do. Individuality stops us from being lemmings..........and me, for one, am not alemming!!!!

If someone wants a louder pipe, he's entitled to that choice.

Come to Chicago's crawling rush hour traffic and then try telling me that cagers are not blind, dumb, reckless and out to kill all people on bikes.

A louder bike WILL make the cager idiot that's about to change lanesturn his head at the sound.I'm walking proof that louder pipes kept mehealthy more than once.

A horn gets some cagerspissed off enough to roadrage you into the median, but a turn of your throttle to a higher decibel doesn't bring that type of cager response.

And I don't care if people think that my bike isloud and obnoxiousif I stay alive and healthy.

People thatmake a blanket nonsensical statement that loud pipes don't save lives are living in a cocoon or haven't experienced a large city's rush hour traffic on a bike.

A good Longer pipe that would give your bike more of a deeper sound, that is very reasonably priced.

This would be a custom fit.

Harley Roadking Mufflers,

I bought a pair of these from the local Harley dealer, they were taken off the bike before it left the show room floor, they are brand new take offs.

the price was right at $25.00 a pair. For that price you could have two pairs and change between the two, One loud and one quiet.

I am using a pair of these on a 1983' GL1100 Goldwing Roadking, Project that i am currently working on. They do have a nice sound.

I personally do not like loud, i do however like a healthy sounding vehicle, something that has a little roar, with out being loud.

but to each his own.

I use all of my senses to 'save' my life, and don't depend on a theory that has been PROVEN WRONG (Myth-Busted). On the open road all the sound is behind the bike, in the city it echos so much it there is no way to tell where it comes from (and might make someone swerve into the rider). IF it were REALLY true about loud pipes the DOT would MANDATE them!! (like always on headlights, turn signals, reflectors, fenders, rear-view mirrors, brake lights,......)



To all those that really feel saved by loud pipes, just put quiet ones on your bike and check your horoscope before you go for a ride. Neither really help you, but you won't annoy everyone else.....



Years ago I was an EMT, and responded to more than one car VS. motorcycle where the driver of the car was at fault, and not one of them claimed they did not "hear" the bike.

It was the sound of the first wings that put the wing thing in my head.
When ever bikes would come up in conversion I would bring up the Goldwing.
It just took 33 years to finally have one.

If you have a cassette recorder with a good microphone, just record your buddy's harley. After a couple of minutes of the harley idling and reving up fade into "Born to be Wild." :smiler: Pop the tape in and turn it up loud at a red light. Search the forum for recent thread on replacing your speakers with the Polk ones.

Thank-you. SometimesI think Harley owners are more reasonable that my "fellow Goldwingers". When I drive my car and a nice low growel comes up beside me, I look. That is a fact. I can even be just noticable. Why must we assume that loud pipes mean ear bleeding pipes?


I was shaking my head all the way through this post.....


I would also like to know if anyone has tested the decibel rating of their wing at highway speeds inside the helmet. Depending on your helmet, you will be above the 82 or 84 decibel rating. This will give you hearing loss even withough louder pipes (with 8+ hours exposure). Whenever I find myself on the highway for more than 4-6 hours or so, I pop in my custom moulded noise filtering plugs. You can still hear the road, music sounds better from helmet speakers, and you end up getting less tired. It is a no brainer to me.


That being said, I am temped by aftermarket options on the Wing, but I do not want to drop the money untill I hear them. They can't be too loud, but sounding like a sewing maching is not what I like to hear for both preferance and safety. The ideal pipes to me would be just a hair above the noise of the road. The sound would have to be distinct enough to create interest and trigger a "what is that" thought encouraging people to look. There is no way I would install a set of pipes that do not give of a plesant exhaust note.

My old 69 BSA didn't have any problems with the valves. It also had a lot of engine mods, so maybe that's the reason. That was the fastest bike I ever owned. Had it up to over 145MPH (indicated). :action:

if you look at my avater you may or may not notice the pipes that i dont have on my bike.



i only have headers, on my 1981 gl1100 i am not sure what you have but if you have anything similar to the way the 1100 had its mufflers you can take off the mufflers, and just have headers, it is a sound the is loud but when you have your helmet on its not loud like to get tired from the noise or a head ache from it, but it is loud enough that i get alot of attention from it, trust me it has saved me a few times in the short three weeks that i have had it.

i was on one motor cycle run though where i was riding next to another biker, a lady biker, and when we started to move from the stop light i was shifting and my bike was back fireing, well that can get kinda annoying but hey it its always funny when you do it next to a car or next to a group of people and watch then jump out of thier skin. well anyway the lady told me when we stopped, that the sound of my bike is loud but it sounds great cause she could hear that i was right next to her. she just wants me to stop making it back fire every time i shift. :hoppingmad:darn





oh well if you still want loud something i would just go with headers for a little bit and then go back if you dont like it.
