In desperate need of an alternator for the GL1500 I just bought on July 12th 2011.
Voltmeter reads 13 v.d.c. instead of 14.5 v.
When the cooling fans kick in, the voltage will drop to 12 volts with the motor running.
That's not good is it?

Email me at <[email protected]>

Thanks for any help on this.

If the bike was at idle when taking these readings, they are not that bad for a stock alt.

Hi Chuck, thanks for the advise.
I always thought the voltage should sit at 14 volts. 12.5 volts is when the motor is switched off.
However this bike starts up great so I figure it's still charging to some degreee.

Happy riding 2011 from Steve in Toronto!

.

On my 97' SE I need about 1500 rpm to get 14 volts out of it.

Thanks for the info.
I am getting a reading of 13.7 VDC at the battery terminal while the motor is running around 1500 rpm. That's obviously with all the headlights and tail lights on.

My older GL1200 read 14.5 vdc this way. So maybe I'm comparing it too much with my old bike!?

However with my GL1500 when I rev the engine up a little at red traffic lights, the neutral indicator brightens up so that must mean it is charging!!!!

The idle has been set by my mechanic at 900 rpm.

You live just to the north of me.
I'm at the 404 and Sheppard Avenue area.

Some day we should get together for a ride.
I plan on going to the Pickering flea market Saturday, that's tomorrow.

Safe riding!

Sounds like what my stock alternator puts out. If alternator has between 40 and 50K on it, and has never been cleaned out, you might want to take the alternator out andopen it upfor inspection.
