Greetings----Will a possible non operating alternator effect engine operation?
The right cylinders are not firing properly. I have done most of the standard checks but an not getting a good spark. Thanks, lew

Sounds more like a coil or pulse genny problem. When you say you did checks, what voltage did you get at the battery with engine running?

I don't think so... if the battery is charged up it should run for a while w/o the alternator charging it but it will run down fairly quickly

Yes, but you need to start somewhere. Get a good running voltage reading(somewhere near 13.5 to 14 at 3000) before digging into your ignition. Pulse generators are a possibility along with plugs, wires etc. I have found that my good running gl1100 puts out a rather anemic looking yellow spark. It is not the powerful looking blue spark that I am used to from my auto experience.
