I just replaced the shocks with Progressives on my 1991 Aspencade and man did it make a difference!

So now instead of just replacing the fork oil I'm going to do a fork re-build and steering stem greasing/tightening so hopefully it will be even better than new.

My forks have no air valves just caps with the hex depression so I'm going to plug or put in Schrader valves.

I know I'm a newbie here (but a very long time motorcyclist/forum guy) so I'd be happy to pay shipping both ways and a little more for the effort. Hell I'll even Paypal a deposit no problem.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Jim

PM flyboyziel56, I don't know if there is one available in the tool loaner program but if not I don't think 1500 fork springs are very hard to do with just a ratchet and extension.

If you don't get dizzy standing on your tip toes and weigh over 160lbs and at the same time turn a ratchet while chewing gum you are good to go.:)

All you really need for the top cap Jim is a 17mm Hex tool like the ones used for removing drain bolts from gearboxes. They come cheap in sets of five or six different sizes and can be had in probably most car accessory shops.

Some people leave the forks in the bike when doing the seals. I personally find it just as easy and fast to remove the forks. Instructions for that here: http://www.goldwingfacts.com/1500forks.htm

I bought a 36mm socket to modify for the steering stem nut but its not a deep well and only 1-1/8" deep as thats all Advance Auto Parts had.

Does anyone know if this may be deep enough? I might be able to bore it out another 1/4" for stem clearance if need be.

From the pics on here it looks like its borderline. http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=12367

They didn't have the 17mm hex plug but I just got one off of eBay for for $5.74 shipped. They have one left if anyone's interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310610565336 Can't beat that price delivered!

I do believe you will need a deep socket. 1 7/16 is the same as 36mm so you might find it that way.
