I am the very happy and proud new owner of 1975 Goldwing GL1000. With no record of when the valve timing belts were replaced, if ever, that is a priority with it having 64,443 miles on it. My other big concern are the rear shocks. I had no idea what they were except I was sure they are not original. It was not until I removed the left side cover to service the battery a couple days ago that I found an air pressure filler valve mounted in a frame gusset at the bottom just above the side cover attachment slot. The shocks appeared to be really low since stock shocks are 13" or 13.25" eye to eye and these measured barely 10" eye to eye. I put some air to it and to my surprise the shocks began to extend out of the bottom until I had the lower piston exposed. On the right shock I was able to read Monroe (S&W inside a little oval) A-525-5R. It is my guess that the "R" is for right and if I can read the other one it will end with 5L. The pressure now in them is about 42psi, form what little I have found out about these shocks is that they take from 35psi to 75psi. Just waiting now to see if they hold air pressure. Obviously I had ridden my first 200 miles with NO rear shocks. I am attaching some photos with the hope that someone here will have more information for me. I installed Monroe Air Shocks on my Suburban last March.
garsh, what an improvement in load capability towing my Toy Hauler.


the instructions indicated that running PSI should not be more than about 50% to 75% of Max Pressure they are rated for. In my case, they are rated at 150 psi, so I pumped them up to 85 psi.... that picked up the rear bumper by 3 inches!!!


So, I would use the same rule of thumb for your Monroe shocks.
BTW, they say to never run them with zero psi, it will ruin the bellows.
for the truck, 10 psi is their minimum.


I did a search, and that shock is made for that model bike.

This ad is from a 1977 Road rider magazine. On my progressive air shocks, I used vacuum hose to cover all the lines.

I'm not sure what the Gates 5119 belt is. What is recommended for the GL1000 is the Gates T274, or NAPA 250274, or Goodyear 40274. Also Randakk, who is a recognized guru on the 4 cylinder wings, recommends replacement of the GL1000 belts at 5 year or 25,000 miles. He says the GL1000 is harder on belts than the later models due to high performance cams and high rpm redline on these engines. Some think that replacement interval is overkill, but it is cheap insurance against what can happen to your engine if one breaks. My riding buddy had a belt break on his GL1000 when it was only about 2 years old and fairly low mileage. It bent a bunch of valves and scarred up the pistons on the side that broke.

Thank You to everyone for all the great information. I have had difficulty finding Honda valve timing belts so I guess I will be looking into the Gates, NAPA or Goodyear. Has anyone had experience with any of these? Is there a difference between the Gates 5119 and Gates T274? It is interesting that all three brands end with 274! Could there be some significance? One other question. Having added air to the rear Monroe shocks and watching them extend to raise the back up over 3 inches was a shock in itself, no pun intended but but it did make me almost fall over backwards as I was kneeling right next to them when it happened. I had no idea that there was lower piston inside the upper half. What is the correct range of pressure for these shocks, Monroe S&W A-525-5R and A-525-5L? Thank You all for the helpful information. Hope to have new belts on it and be riding very soon.

You might find it interesting that Honda used Gates belts as original equipment, rebranded "Honda". Amazon sells them for less than $40 for two of them. Your local auto parts store will be able to get them for about $40 each. The NAPA belt is just a rebranded Gates belt.

I hadn't heard of the 5119's but I just bought a set of T274's for my 1100. The 1000 uses the same belt.

Thanks Much! Going Sanel Auto Parts to check on pricing. Randakk has them for $47.00 a piece. Also while checking Randakk I went ahead and ordered the special tool for timing belt cover bolts, a bit pricey but anything to make the job easier works for me!
