Just ordered a pair of full size windshield wings from Dennis Kirk for my 85 LTD. The windshield has black metal support brackets on the lower outer edge of each side with a predrilled hole in each one.I would assume these lower holes,left and right are to facilitate the mounting hardware of the wings. What needs to be done for the upper mounting hardware? Must I mark and drill the upper left and right holes?Ifholes are requiredwhat is the best method of doing this to prevent a crack.
This is new to me, and what do you think about these wings,are they useful?

Quite surprised at the lack of response and also the lack of
information about windshield wings in general on the site having done a search of past posted and coming up with nothing.I would think they would add a bit wider air bubble
but having never ridden with them I don't know what to expect,whether they vibrate in the wind or whatever.
Several comments about Baker air wings but thats a different
thing in a different location on the Bike.

I assume you're talking about these? I've not seen them on many 1200's, but my 86 Aspy had them when I bought it, so I didn't have to mount them. I also can't say how much they helped. I replaced the windshield with a wider shield with a vent.

I don't believe those lower holes on your windscreen are factory. Hopefully they will match up with where you want to mount the wing brackets. Yes, you will need to drill the upper holes, and the lower ones as well if they are not in the right place. I've not drilled a windscreen before but I've read that putting tape over the area you are drilling helps to keep it from cracking. Hopefully someone who has experience in this will be along with helpful info, but here's a bump up for ya. :)

I have a short set on my 85 1200 Aspy. They were already on the bike when I got it. About vibrating in the wind, nope they don't. We have been out in some nasty winds here and I never noticed any vibration from them at all.

I have them on my 87 aspy and they just attach to the windshild with about 1/8 inch gap from the windshild. just mark the location with a sharpie and drill. I used a 1/4 inch high speed bit, let the bit do the work, don't push the drill as it will do the work if you let it.

Had them on both my 86 Aspys as standard, so I don't really know what it is like without them. I haven't had any problems with them on either bike.

use a variable speed drill motor and keep it in the middle to slow range.

high speed will melt the plastic and cause the drill bit to grab. When the tip just breaks thru, stop and then finish the hole from the reverse side. I often just turn the drill motor shaft with my hand to feel it pull thru plastic very carefully.

Other times, I have lucked out and the bit went right on thru w/o grabbing. Luck of the draw.

I had a set of those on my Venture!! Best accessory ever invented [after the backrest].

Never had a problem getting all the air I wanted, without a hole in the middle of my windshield + fold-out to keep rain away.



Mine were same on each side... sure wish I could find a set!!! :sadguy:

Thanks for the info, the comments are exactly what I wanted. Its important to get input like this "Before hand"
to avoid a mistake and mess up an expensive windshield.
I figure a larger frontal area even if its just a few inches may help to enlarge the air bubble which also helps in the rain at cruising speed.
