OK, next learning step for me: I have what are more or less stock mufflers on my '89. There are as many opinions out there as to how loud we each like our bike, or how quiet, and we're all ready to defend our opinion.



For me, it's not about "Loud Pipes Save Lives", which I think this forum has talked me out of, as most of the sound probably goes behind the bike, rather than in front of it.



I believe MOST people will buy Harley's to look cool (image), to buy American, to fit in socially with other bikers, or for the great sound they make. Now, whether or not you WANT all that sound with you constantly is your choice.



I'm thinking I might like a better, deeper, throatier sound than the stock muffler offers. I've heard of Hollywood mufflers and others, but don't know what the difference in sound would be. So, here are two questions:



1. Can someone offer a list of the different types of mufflers for GoldWings, and rate them according to decibels, or volume, whatever? Like, from quiet to loud?



2. There is a company who makes mufflers which, at a flip of a switch, go from loud to quiet.....to fit Harley's. Would these fit a Wing, or does someone make such a thing?

My wing was modified when I got it with a pull switch that opens a butterfly valve at the collector box to go from quiet to loud and back. You can see pics in my gallery on here.

I like having the option, run quiet on most runs but enjoy the sound in the twisties and freaking people out:cooldevil:

Being that the valve is located at the collector box the sound comes from directly below me as opposed to behind me. Have had noone in group rides complain of it being obnoxious or saying they won't ride behind me as can be the case with straight pipes that hurt your ears.

Cool.....is this variable, or simply loud/quiet?

Variable to a point depending on how far I open the valve, but anything past halfway open is about the same.

I'm running a set of allycats on a 1500. they are not stock quiet,nor are they loud. they have a low growl in lower rpm's that i enjoy and level off at cruise speed so i can enjoy the radio. for me it's a nice blend. by the way i picked a few horse and torque along the way

I've heard this bike running with the valve wide open at idle and rpm's. It has a nice throaty side to it without being overly loud. Wish I had it on my 1100.

Remember, a 4 or 6 cyclinder isn't going to sound like a 2 cylinder.

Not at all, with the valve opened on mine it has more of an exotic sports car sound to it.

Last September the wife and I drove up to Hot Springs Ark, just for a 4 day get away...While there I observed many different kinds of bikes, from Harleys to Gold Wings and might near every thing in between.....From dressed to naked and one that was so gaudy that blinders were required to look at it....

But the one bike that really caught my ears and my attention was this 2007 1800 Gold Wing....Now that bike had a sound that made me pay attention..It wasn't a loud bike by no means, but it had this throaty sound that was really pleasant to listen too???? It said "Listen to me, I'm 6 cylinders of pure power"....I asked that owner if that was just stock mufflers, or were they after market....He said that a friend of his had tuned them for him....Now how his friend tuned those mufflers I have no idea, but it was a really cool sound...I also asked if it made talking on his intercom or listening to the music more difficult, his answer was just like someone else said the sound was behind him and not under his feet, so no difference in listening to radio or talking on intercom.....

I now wish I had gotten his e-mail addy or name etc to where I could get more info on that tuned system...

Even with the sound emanating from below me as opposed to behind me I find I have no problem listening to the radio either by headset or speakers nor talking to my Wife while riding. Like Bagmaster said, it has a nice throaty sound without being too loud.

I have one of those flapper thingies (technical term) on mine too, but I had issues with it. I ended up removing the cable and leaving the flap closed all of the time. It did sound good though. I don't remember what it was called, but I had it installed at the Honda Hoot when it was still in Asheville, NC. Boogey Lights used to install them. I'm currently running TorqMaster (http://www.torqmasterpipes.com) Hollywood Longs on my '94 Aspy. They're almost 10 years old and have some rust. The packing in the baffle is all blown out too so they're a little loud for me. One of these days I'll pull the baffle out and re-wrap them.

So, this is interesting. I am, however, looking for help in how to improve the sound into something like you all are discussing, without going too loud.



Any thoughts on what commercial products or mufflers are out there one might purchase and install today?

Don't know if they're available in the US, but I've just fitted a pair of Jama mufflers on my 1500 - they give a lovely throaty growl without being too loud. Out on a run last week, a friend said they sounded well and it was almost like following a B52 down the road!

I fixed the link in my earlier post. As far as I know, these mufflers are still available and sound pretty darn good.

Gino had a set of jardines on his 1100 that howled. I wonder if those would do for the 1500?
