need help gl 1100

i have a 1981 gl 1100 replaced starter everything was fine was riding and bike started missing and back firing started riding home all of a sudden it back fired and everything was fine rode it a few more times after that was good got on it this morning started fine started going down the road backfireing like crazy then cleared up for couple miles thenstarted up again wont low idle and when idleing will spike about 1000rpms falls off same way could it be ignition timing or points any suggestions

I would start by looking at the ground wires on the coils. If you have an inductive timing light you can check the ignition by putting the timing light on each plug wire. A missing plug will make the light miss to. You could also look for a vacuum leak but intermittent problemes tend to be electrical.
I like the timing light idea, I use it all the time to check on stuff...Good one... Check out your fuel filter too..
No points > electronic.
I too would look at wiring for the coils. Maybe one of the ignition wires or its parts.
Sounds like a cylinder (or two) is loosing spark, loading-up on fuel, kicking back in and giving the high idle when burning the excess fuel off.
