These kinds of symptoms have always messed with my feeble mind. Two things I would suggest to help diagnose and sort out the 'possibles' from the 'not likely' causes would be: #1 > a compression test, and report the findings so the GURUs can sink their teeth into it...and: #2 > remove the air filter and shoot a short 'puff' of starting fluid (ether-based) down into the air box, while starting it, at idle, and while giving a little throttle...

If the fluid gives a fair sign of improvement, I would focus more on the fuel system. If the compression seems low, you might think about things like 'set' rings, valve clearances... :waving:
