Hi, this is my first post here and I'm sure this forum is great as most forums I've joined have been. I don't own the bike but have done work on it.

The bike is a 83 goldwing 1100, here's the story, I was recommended by someone and had a call and was told what he needed done. I had no problem doing this. He said he had it to the dealer last year for a head gasket and asked them to do both but he said afterwords the right side was leaking and figured they only did the left and there was no sign of them doing so. So anyways his orders were to replace the right side head gasket and also do the timing belts and I suggested a thermostat and new exhaust gaskets.

He drops the bike off and I never heard it run as I was inside, I pushed the bike in and started to work on it. Everything went smoothly, the hardest part was removing the tank to refill the antifreeze. I started the bike and heard a noise on the right side which sounded like really loose valve or a chain. The owner showed up and said the noise wasn't there before. I rechecked the clearances andthey were fine. It was definetly the right side and listened with a scope and it sounds like in around the mechanical fuel pump. I ran it with the fuel pump removed from the camshaft but the noise is still there. I'm baffled, I rechecked the belts tensions, the bike is pumping oil like crazy, checked the valves and even closed up the gap to 1.5 thous and it made no difference, checked the exhaust for inner cracks, replaced the exhaust gaskets.

I then re asked the guy and he said the noise wasn't there, I told him because he said he had been running the bike with the leak for a while and it would run a bar hotter than normal and I explained that when I drained the rad only about 500 ml came out and it was extremly low and this could give a false reading on the temp guage becausethe sensor is by the thermostat and in my opinion there wasn't enough antifreeze in the bike and it could have overheated 1 or more times and caused the bike to get hot and cause damage to make this noise and he would have to live with this or spend alot to find the problem.

Anyone run into this noise or have any suggestions because I'm ready to give the bike back as the owner doesn't understand that it was nothing I did and if he wants to have someone else check it and find the problem and if it was to do with my work I'd happily refund the labour.

I have a feeling it is something in the #3 cylinder. A very small object can make a noise like you described when being slapped around on top of a piston.

There is no sign of anything in there, when I cleaned the cylinder surface I cleaned everything with brake clean and wiped out the cylinders, the head gasket came off easy, also I had the plugs out and there weren't any signs of damage to the plug from debris and also I ran the bike with the right side plugs out for a second to see if the noise was still there and it was. Also the guy took the bike and drove it for 2 days and brought it back. Today when I got it back I rechecked everything again and the plugs are fine, there should have been signs of damage if there was debris in there. Thanks for your opinion.

It probably would have spit out any foreign object by now too. Was just a guess, I have heard noises like that and it was always either a piece of carbon or some other foreign object like a nut or screw out of a carburetor or something accidentally dropped in the intake.

It's definetly not a screw or anything like that, at idle you can hardly hear it, butit is there, especially when you stand on the left side and hear how much quieter it is on that side and when you increase the throttle ot get louder. I repaired a vulcan 1500 the other day that came in with a loud rap which sounded like a rod starting and found that the exhaust pipe inside cracked and was hitting the outer part. The pipes were double walled and it split about 1.5 inches down. I checked the goldwing in case of this but it was ok.

Yes I checked the lobes, they are quite easy to check as you can slide the rocker to the side, like I said the even closed up the valve clearances really tight to see if it made a difference, I even took some tension off the belt on that side in case the head or cam was wore and cause the valves to go loose and tight as the cam gear turned. Ran into this on the old xr80 and 100 dirtbikes alot but everything was tight. Never checked the stator bolt, the owner seems to think it was something I have done and I would like to eliminate anything else and see what he wants to do.

Ummm what a pickle , its a shame you didnt hear the bike when he left it for you . IF its a new noise since you did the work a couple things come to mind . You say its oiling well . This is a far reach but did the oil supply orfice go back into place ? If not I dont know why extra amounts of oil would make a noise but :(.

You say you did timing belts as well . Though the noise seems to be at the rear , could it be a belt idler ? They will whine if the belt is to tight .

Could it possibly be an intake vacuum leak ? A small leak might be a sucking squeak noise .

Wish I had a solid for sure answere . I hope is somthing simple/easy when you find it.

I was referring to the top of the lobe, not the bottom where you have it set to check the clearance. It can wear and make a bad noise no matter how the clearance is set.

Yes the orfice is in place with 2 new orings, I ran it with the rocker cover off and it is oily well, I squeezed the right timing belt cover off to release some tension like I siad previously and ran the bike while it was off and no noise for sure is coming from there. When I put the head back on I resealed the 2 intakes with threebond 1194 and sprayed the area while running and no change in sounds or motor rpm.

Dave I was referring to the lobe, you can slide the rocker to the side and hit the starter and rotate the engine to see the lobe, it's tricky but I did it. You have to watch your fingers.

Timing is set correctly? I'd pull the head.
