Okay, now I'm in real trouble. The handlebars are tweaked a little to the left and I can't seem to figure out how to move them.

Anybody here know which nut I'm supposed to loosen, or how to line up the bars? Or failing that, where the detonator switch is?

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the bottom nut. The knurled thing below it is the tension knob for the head bearings. Don't know what that upper bolt is for.
As an specialist , ( i was bike mechanic about 45 years ago , - an after scholl job ! ) , you turn that upper bolt with your pictured "arrow" loose , punch it down with a hammer , (this bolt activates an inner piece like in some concrete ancors ) ,and you can turn the handlebars or lower or raise them.

The top bolt should loosen the bars, the lower nuts are for the head bearings. Try tapping on that bolt with it loosened.
Never mind, I see it has already been addressed.

Dennis,it’s down the center of the sten,Allen bolt.dont loosen that collar.

Didn't you take your bicycle apart to see how it worked when you were a pup?:surprise:
We had Western Flyer's. Mine was a single speed with fat tires and my older bro's was a 3 speed with skinny tires. I don't recall the handlebars having that bolt on either bike. And, by the time I was in Jr. High, I had pretty much given up pedals.

Wait till he tries to loosen the pedals!

Okay...what about the pedals should I know? I was kinda thinking about changing them.

Other news: The old tires turned to dust when I tried to get them off. The powder that looks like sawdust? Yup that used to be a tire.

Lol, they have reverse threads, that's all.

Do you plan on cleaning/greasing all the bearings? Although I don't believe it deteriorates like those tires, wow!

And make sure you have good cables for the brakes! Those things go fast and you may wanna stop.

Only one side is left hand,it’s marked on the end of the pedal with an L

Bicycle pedals have changed since the 'Rat trap' style. Those pedals usually had toe clips and straps. Not fun when you have a pile up in racing and trying to free yourself.

I was thinking about greasing the bearings. Is there a torque spec for them?

I cant figure out how to lube the cables. I'd just change them but they are actually run through the frame and I don't think they can be changed.


I would call those tires Maypops.
The tubes weren't brittle like the tires, and would have held air if it weren't for the holes.

Yeah, didn't like those toe traps.

The first time you hit a big bump and your feet come off the pedals you'll be looking for toe straps/clips. Mine was a Cannondale aluminum fat tube touring bike. Loved to ride, many good memories. I hope you get it up and running soon, enjoy the ride.

The bearings fell out when I opened the races. I don't know why I expected contained units. So, I put it back together the old fashioned way, with lots of lithium grease to hold the balls in place while I put the outer races back in.

Anybody know of any product that might clean up the spokes? When you get everything else cleaned up, they sort of stand out. And not in a good way.
