Our 5000 Km. trip was wonderful. Rode Vancouver Island BC the whole length, then the Ferry to Port Angeles Washington and Hwy 101 Oregon and California coast. Crater Lake,Grand Coulee Dam and many desert miles and wide open spaces.

A couple of things learned: A fully loaded wing with passenger is heavy, that goes without saying. The decks of Ferry's are steel,if they're wet watch it when you stop to park. My foot slipped on the wet steel deck and down we when, broken left mirror.

Construction Zones in summer are common,be careful, the slope you stop on may be steeper than you think. We were forced to stop on an uphill grade on a sweeping banked left curve. The stop was 25 mins. requiring using the sidestand.Soon as I leaned the Bike over onto the sidestand I knew there was no way I'd get it vertical again without help with my wife as passenger and loaded for a 2 week trip.I estimate weight in excess of 1200 lbs. Luckily my son was just ahead of us and helped me bring our wing vertical again as the traffic started to move.

Next time I'm in this situation I'll ride slowly past the parked vehicles either to the front of the line or to where the highway is resonably straight not sloped sharply left or right. We can handle uphill or downhill slopes within reason but severe left or right slopes are absolutely trouble for a fully loaded touring Motorcycle unless you are maybe a champion weight lifter.

A trailer is in my plans before another trip like this which will get the bulk of weight off the bike.I've pull trailer before and found it safer and easier than loading a wing to the point it changes the balance and handling. If it was'nt for our 40 years of riding experience handling 1200 lbs. of loaded bike could be down right dangerous.
Every stop light or tight turn demands total attention to balance at slow speeds, the trailer is better for two up riding fora long trip.

BTW 1/2 a Liter of 20W50 oil in 5000kms.isnot bad for a 26 year old Wing I'd say, I used more Lemon Pledge than oil.

Happy and Safe summer riding everyone.

Great things to keep in mind on those long hauls. I have a GL1200 LTD and would love to think that someday we too could make a 5000 km or 3600 mile trip like that. I like the trailer idea as well..... Might just have to start looking for one. Other than the one spill on the deck of the fairy, Im glad all went well for you on your trip.
