Hi, My name is Rex. Just sold my Ultra Classic. Was thinking of another Harley but my cousin who has been a true harley guy all his life just switched to a wing. "said he went to a real motorcycle." If its good enough for him I'd love to try it. So the search begins for my own wing. Any suggestions as to year to start with. Would a 1500 be a good start. Thanks

Any wing would be a good start althought the 1800's handling is unbelievable. And by the way;

exr1, first, welcome to the forum, second, my thought would be to take a spin on cousins bike and see how it fits you (just remember to give it back, they are addicting). Then you have an idea whether you want that size or something bigger or smaller.

In my opinion you can't go wrong. Depends on what you like. I had an 85 1200 and now I have a 96 1500. Both are great bikes. The 1500 is definately a bigger bike. But it handles every bit as well. It doesn't get quite as good a gas mileage, but it is more comfortable. The term "Road Sofa" is only partly true. It is very comfortable bit it is still all motorcycle. I ride mine peg to peg in the twisties.
These bikes last incredibly well, and you can get good service life out of any of the older goldwings. But age does affect us all, even the goldwings, so I would suggest to get the newest year that your budget allows.

Oh yeah, mileage isn't a big deal. These bikes are good for 200,000 miles easy and then some. I saw a wing for sale on e-bay once with 500,000, that's right a half a million miles. And the guy advertising it was really proud of that.

I had 155,000 on my 1200 and I sold it running great. The current owner is still riding it regular.

But in real life people still don't like the high mileage, so the prices may come down pretty sharply at 100,000.
