New member considering a GW

No one, I mean NO ONE is more limited in mechanical aptitude than I am. Just ask anyone on here about my timing belt fiasco. Before I bought my 'Wing I had never worked on a motorcycle before.

That being said: Thanks to the members of this forum, the fact that all the manuals you will ever need are free online, and a little motivation I am now confident that I can just about do anything for my bike that is needed.

I was kind of in your shoes last year. High gas prices spurred me to start looking for a bike and a GW was what I wanted. I set myself a limit and started shopping. After 2 months and viewing a lot of bikes I found one: a 1984 Aspencade with 40K on it. It wasn't running, had set up for over a year, and was a full day's drive away. Now she runs like a top! I love riding her.

Set yourself a limit financially and go for it! When you find what you think is a deal come back here, tell us all about it, and enjoy the ride!

Note: my wife was not too enthused about my bike at first. After one ride with me the she won't stay off it!

The downside to an older bike becomes availablity of parts. There are still a lot of parts out there to be had, and there are a lot of work arounds for what isn't available any more. And I've seen a lot of interesting work arounds out there. Some really good imaginations out there. People seem to always find ways to keep the old machines running. Of course that doesn't mean anything if you end up being one of the unlucky ones that the odds are against you on. But there's lots of help here to help keep the odds in your favor.


It's important to live up to your own desires here. I have my 2nd Goldwing, and I used both the first one, and the current one to commute to work almost every day. It's only about 10 miles one way. But I enjoy it. It's part of me. Everyone at work knows it too, and they notice the days that I don't ride.


I take a ride almost every weekend. Usually in the 100-200 mile range. I almost never take trips, I just don't have the time or money.
I know people that travel thousands of miles at a time, and I know people that don't ride at all. But each has their own reason for owning their bike. And just about all of them enjoy the ownership.


When I got my first Goldwing I had a small bike too. I figured I'd use the small bike around town and use the Goldwing for the longer rides. What actually happened was I never rode the small bike again. The Goldwing was just fine around town and I liked it a whole lot better.
