I have just gotten on board as a new member tonight , and I like what I see so far.Seems like a good group of people. I purchased a 1984 GL1200 a few months ago from an individual and have just now aquired the time to start enjoying it . Runs and rides like a dream. ( wished I had ridden it sooner) . I race mud trucks during the summer months & haven't much time for pleasure. I purchased the bike from the 2/nd owner and it only has 45k original miles on it. My concern is making sure I maintain it properly. I am not sure about the interval for timing belt replacement, spark plug relacement and oil change service. She runs perfect now , but I want to keep it that way. I could contact my local dealer for info , but I would like the input from some owners as what would be the best schedule for the timing belt replacement mainly. Thanks in advance for any input !!!!!!!!

The rule of thumb for me is ,, anything new to me unless it has documented papers that says different ,,, Timing belts are usually 60,000 miles or 3 yrs ,,if I don't know ITS TIME NOW , for under $200.00 a peace of mind is worth that to me . just my opinion though ! Oil Change usually 3500 - 5000 miles depending on the kind of riding I do ,,,,( around town ) or several long trips !! Welcome to the forum Bro ,,,alot of great information here !!

Welcome from dowunder ( spell check says " cow under")
confused with cattle ? a cow udder would be down under ;)

A big welcome to ya Rick . Enjoy the bike and vist the forum often . as to the timing belts I agree if theres no paper trail on when the last new set was installed , it's been way to long . that just based on the aging of the rubber since 84 . Those belts are outta sight and outta mind for many folks .

Welcome to the family. If you race Mud Trucks, you should be handy with a wrench, you can get the timing belts for around $30.00 or less each, plenty of info on here to do it yourself. Just like regular oil changes, "cheap insurance". Have fun & ride safe.
