Greetings from a very cold and snowy St. Louis. I'm currently looking for an older wing. Buddy bought a bike and wants to go riding. I haven't ridden in a few years but always admired the wings from the seat of my 750 Yamaha. I’d like to start as economically as possible as the Mrs is not yet sold on the idea. Couple of quick questions:





1. Is there a “big” ride/handling difference between 1200 and 1500?

2. If I go with 1200 I was told stay with 87 as the ride is much smoother.

3. It was also suggested that I search for an LTD or Sei as the fuel injection is worth the extra dollars. Just try to make sure the stator has been replaced.





Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Iis8up I own a 1500 and enjoy it. I've never riden a 1200. I've heard of what you said about the stator and the fuel inj. on the 1200. You do know that the 1200 is a 4 cyl vs the 1500 being a 6 cyl. I would also read the goldwing history section on this site about alll the differences over the years to the wing. I would also buy the latest bike you could afford. There seems to be the 10 year rule with Honda dealers meaning they won't work on bikes 10 years old anymore. If your good with a wrench or know someone who is then you'll be ok with a 1200. Hope this helps alittle others with 1200 will be along shortly. I have a 85 1200I and love it. I'm sure that if you look around you will find a reasonably priced 1200. When I get the chance, I plan to move up to a 1500 for the extra power and a little bit more room when traveling long distances.

More members are sure to be around that have owned both and will give you a better insight on which is best.

My wife is from the St. Louis area. Been here in Florida long enough to be considered a Floridian. She still has family out in the Warsaw area.

howdy and welcome to our forum.

I have owned both a 1200 and a 1500. I thoroughly loved both of them, but for different reasons.


The 1200 was almost a bottle rocket, but still big enough to be a touring bike and quite comfy.

The 1500 I always called "My Cadillac" because with the cruise control on, my feet up on the highway pegs, and me leaning "way back" onto the backrest, I could cross my arms and just watch the Smiles follow the Miles. :action: :action: :action:

Stable, lots of storage space, momma has lots of room, and it runs, and runs, and runs all day, all week, all years without any problems almost always.

A few PMs here and there and rarely a few mechanical ills that are well detailed and fixes are easy to get answers for.

Me biased? Nope :action:
