Hey all,
I am new to the forum, I am finally getting time to get my '81 GL1100 Standard operational again and look forward to pouring over all the information here.
A little history on my bike..
I got it as a semi-restored basketcase.. the guy was going through the bike and supposedly just had to paint it and put it back together. So.. I took on the project, went through what was left (brakes, tires, paint, assembly) on the assumption that the motor had been gone through as I was told. After many hours assembling a bike I had never worked on before from a myriad of different boxes and containers full of mixed up parts.. I heat-cycled the motor once per day for a week. Starting it (with some effort, I'd guess due to carbs needing tuned), letting it run until it was warm, then shutting it down. I retorqued everything I could get a wrench on, changed the oil (again), and decided it was time for a shake down ride. Took it out, came back and bled the brakes and a few other little adjustments.. and then took it for a real ride to town. I noticed an oil leak from the rear cover on the engine. I re-retorqued everything.. and promptly got the bike home. After looking closer there was a piece of gasket protruding from between the cases, when I touched it, it broke off in my hands!!
Long story short, the motor had not be 'gone through' like I was promised. Frustrated, and out of time (being in the middle of a divorce at the time) the bike was parked for the next 2 years.
So now that I am getting around to it--I have a beautiful bike that still starts and runs (still hard starting at first, but restarts with ease after being warm) that needs the motor pulled and newgaskets installed.. and 'gone through' correctly.
Anyways.. hi! I'm Eric, you'll probably be seeing a fair amount of my around here. =)
