Wow...with all of these speedy welcomes to a test post, I guess I ought to put up an introductory message.
I am a Super-Duper Senior (6th year) at Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, MO. I took the MSF course last October and purchased my first motorcycle about 2 weeks later. It was/is a '81 Yamaha XJ550 Maxim.
I have ridden it every opportunity since getting it running (the only things that stopped me were ice and rain (though I tried for the rain, but the 28 year old ignition coils had other plans.)) After making 2 trips to Indianapolis on that little 550, I figured it was time for me to upsize to something a little more appropriate for that kind of trip.
Last week, I picked up a '83 GL1100A. All I had to do to get her to run was replace the battery. The previous owner(s) made a mess of the wiring and fairing when they installed a standard radio. Needless to say, the radio doesn't work, and I am having shorts in a turn signal and the front brake wiring is shorting out somewhere. I can take care of that pretty easily though...it will just take some time.
The other problem I am having is that it blows smoke when you start cold. It also isn't idleing at all until I ride it for about 15-20 minutes, then it will idle at about 2000-2500 RPM. Anything lower than 2000 and it starts to shake violently and make a horrid sound. But she runs great at speed.
I am already planning on checking the valve clearances and syncing the carbs. I have started to run Sea-Foam through. Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance! You guys, in the past 4 hours, have shown that you are just as active (if not more) than XJbikes.com where I have lived since getting my 550.
