Are you hitting the starter button? That engages the reverse.

shows what a newbie I am- duh no- guess I will try that now thanks for letting me know and not flaming me about being a nob

Congratulations on your new wing!. remember the reverse is just to assist the rider, it is operated by the electric starter motor not the actual bike engine :)

and the less you use it the better.

engine should be running and in neutral. Pull reverse lever back and press starter button. Bike goes backwards approx 2-3 mph. I use mine all the time. I normally feel things work better if used as designed and regularly. Zimmerleemark- is this a weak area and subject to failure under normal use? If it is I'll only use it when really needed....Steve

DON'T pull/force the reverse handle up without the bike running and in neutal.

Says owners manual.

The reverse system is not weak and subject to failure under normal use. At 6' 3", I don't use mine very often but have friends that are vertically challenged and use theirs all the time.

I use the reverse on my bike a lot both to back up and also as a parking brake if I have to park where the bike faces downhill to prevent the kick stand from folding. If you have any resistance to getting the reverse lever up or down simply rock the bike back and forth a little bit and it should move easily. Never force it, the handle is connected with a couple cable so you don't want to bend anything or pop the ends off the cables. I like to park besides a bunch of HDs or big twins. They all park rear endto the curb, it's fun to pull in frontwards then back out when you leave. A lot of guys don't realize a Goldwing can do that, you see some pretty odd looks on their faces.:cooldevil: I had one guy follow me out as I backed out on a street, he asked, "how do you push back so easily?"

There is a spring associated with the reverse lever. Using the reverse lever for extended periods of time will cause the spring to loose some of it's tension. The reverse lever was never intended to be used as a parking brake. Leaving the transmission in 1st gear will keep the bike from rolling off the side stand.

Personally, I think backing in to the curb is a more safe way to park. It greatly improves visibility concerning street traffic when pulling out of the parking space.

Just my viewpoint, others may differ.

One more think which wasn't mentioned ( I learned from experience), MAKE SURE THE KICK STAND IS UP.

I used the reverse on my '94 everday to get out of the garage. Never worried about it wearing out.

+1 on being careful pulling on the reverse lever, rock the m/c back/forth a bit to make sure the tranny gears line up.

You do NOT want to break something.

If you are looking to be flamed as a noob, you came to the wrong place ;) We enjoy sharing the passion and tech information amongst each other here.

Welcome!!

(Yeah, welcome ya Fookin' Noob!!!) feel better?

Mrwoodboat, I am interested to know if you got it to work for you and what you think?

I have a related problem and wont highjack his thread but mine wil only back up a few feet before it stops and I have to lower the lever and raise it up again to continue backing up. I will have to do this repeatadly to get out os a space. This is on level or hills. Any ideas what is wrong with my junk?
imported post

I would believe that since reverse is using the starter that after a certain amount of time it automatically cuts out to prevent burning up the starter. Then when you lower the lever it resets the time on the starter. Safety feature I would think.
imported post

Actually, you only need to release the start button to reset the timer.

Granted, it is a timed event, but it is usually more than enough to get back to where you need to be.

I can back out a 25' driveway and into the street without letting up on mine.

hey Mr. Woodboat,
Nobody will flame you for an honest innocent question. We've all been there. New to our wings and something simple we didn't know YET.

Now if you want to see a whole bunch of guys, (over 35yrs old) blush with stupidity....

ask by a show of hands....

How many of us have forgotten to turn on the gas petcock?

and... How many times have we done it?

rotfl

If I've haven't done that one at least 50 times I'll eat my hat. And every single time, I've felt like an idiot. Fortunately there is almost nobody ever around to see me do it. (or not do it, as the case may be)

So ask away and we'll always chime in to help a new winger get his bearings. :)

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask?

The only thing to watch is, if you use it to reverse into your garage, make sure you return the handle FULLY to its normal position and not 1/4" away, otherwise it won't start.

This usually happens when you're in a hurry to get someplace, you're all dressed up in your gear and you cant understand why it won't start.......

you then rush into the house, tear off all your riding gear, get changed and take the car, arriving late at your destination.

Returning home, you start to work through the starter system and are just on the point of removing the starter motor when someone suggests you try the reverse lever.........

It clicks into place and she starts.

Don't ask me how I know..................................

This happened to one of my riding friends. He called me one day from a shopping center parking lot and said his battery was dead. When he pressed the starter button all he heard was a click sound. When I got there we checked his battery and it was good. Then he mentioned that he used the reverse to back into the parking space. The reverse lever looked like it was down, but it was not down all the way. We pushed it down and she fired right up.
