Just obtained a GL1000 from a guy who bought it new in 1977. 65K and hasn't run for the last 5 years but looks in reasonable condition. A Honda branded (looks like a Vetter type) fairing has be added later plus aftermarket luggage.

Looking forward to getting it running again - I just love the engine layout - and since it comes with the original shop manual (plus a Haynes) hopefully, with the help of the guys on this website, there shouldn't be any showstoppers! Definitely think I will need the engine out to check heads & pistons. Rebuild the carbs and will replace the cam belt, clutch and pump while its out. Anything else worth doing on an engine with this mileage whilst its in bits?

Already thinking about removing the fairing and the luggage to get the 'Wing' back to close to its original state. I've never been a fan of 70's fairings and the naked bike looks fantastic (that engine again). Having read through many posts and other articles it doesn't seem worth trying to make it concourse but just to concentrate on getting it functional and then to personalise it. I can see myself taking it on weekend rides rather than touring (I have another boxer engined bike for that). I would be gratefully for any hints on websites / information on where I can find people who have fitted or suppliers who have or can supply non-standard parts as part of a restoration. For example: With the fairing coming off - has anybody found an acceptable non-oem headlamp installation that fits the look and feel of the bike?

Anyway...............looking forward to the challenge. Just finished working for a company that had me working away from home during the week for the last 14 years........... so the wife has cleared a space for me in the shed............ might as well have a project while I'm in there!
