Not another GL1200 Stator quesion

Hello Everyone.

I feel like I hit the jackpot last weekend when I was able to purchase a fully loaded1984 aspencade in running condition for very little money. I have wanted one of this body style and am very excited. The reason I got it so cheaply is because the previous owner had replaced an old battery because it was not holding a charge. The replacement also went dead, and he felt that the stator was bad. When I got it home the first thing I noticed was that the stator wires were blue instead of yellow. So I think someone has replaced it sometime in the past (134k miles). Someone has also replaced the connections to the stator and those leading to the voltage reg. Thesewere clean and unmelted. WhenI checked the stator with an ohm meterI fould the one of the leads is open.

Since it looks like I have to replacea stator have 3 options.

1) Take the engine out of the frame and replace the old stator. I have worked on bike for several years and this would be the biggest project. My quesion is what brand of stator is best? ebay? partsnmore? Or should I have the old one rewound? Special tools?

2) Replace the stator with a poor boy kit. Again I would like to hear from people who have done it, good/bad.

3) I discovered a new kit that replaces the left timing coverwith a replacement one that has a altenator built in. The cost is about $600.00, and I dont really like the looks of it, but it is out there.

Any experence that you may have on these 3 options would help me decide. I am currently making short trips with it and making sure everything works before puttingit to bed for the winter. The project will start in the spring.

Thanks

Dale

Dan,

I just installed a Poorboy conversion on my 86 Interstate.

I was a little anal on the install and it too me about 20 hours to do it. If i were to do it again i think I could do it in less, finished it on a Friday departed on Sunday for a 1300 mile trip, at 900 miles I spent 20 minutes tighting the belt. I would not do anything different and do not have a doubt that the poorboy is the way to go.

Best regards and good luck

Garry

Option two, or option one.. stay away.. far away form option 3 :).

ok in the way i see it.. being able to repair the alternator in any automotive shop its a great plus... plus the better power output will give you the opportunity to run extra lights, im talking about running lamps not just deco lighting.
while replacing the stock will be a bigger pain in the ass than installing the poorboy and you will end up with the same power output also if it ever fails, you will have to do it all over again!

my thoughts about option 3.. first of all. it looks ugly, secondly, the bolts that hold the timing belt cover were not designed to hold the weigh of the alternator.

I haven't done any of those. but when my stator fails, which i know it will do sometime i will not hesitate to decide on the poorboy.

I just made installed a Poorboy type conversion on my 85 Interstate & my friend"s 86 aspendecade in the last month , and we are both very happy about the end result! my stator didn"t go bad I just did it because the bike was apart while I was replacing a head gasket ! 2 week"s later my friend"s actually went. the poorboy kit doesn"t look like much for the money , but for the all the trouble you go through chasing part"s & trying to figure thing"s out , it"s worth every dollar $$$$$$$$$$

I just did the Poorboy conversion about a month ago on my 1200. Far as I'm concerned it's the only way to go. Takes time and patience but it's all good. My vote is for Poorboy!!

i replaced the stator on mine last week and i could have done a poor boy modification to it easily but i did not want it to look bad or anything i not saying the poorboy kit is a bad thing

its just you spend several hundred dollars on the kit and the alternator and then you have the possible problems that may go wrong

i pulled the motor i had the motor out and back in in about 5 hours or so got the stator from j and p cycle high output
more than what i will use anyway
the gaskets online a lot cheaper than honda

all together i spent around 200 dollars or so on parts and 2 days working 2 hrs a day or so on the job

;)Thanks for all the input. The reason I am waiting until spring is I have to sell my 85 V65 Sabre first.

If I decide on the poor boy. How much is the kit and where can I buy it?

Thanks

Made some brackets, went poorboy 15,000 miles ago. It is the best thing you can do to old goldwing. There is no way, you can tell if new stator will charge until it is installed in bike.

I use a company called custom rewind, with me being a shop owner he sells me the stator for the gl1200 for 80.00.
I've used ricks and electro and have no complaints with there stators.
Custom rewind will send you a re-round stator for 80.00 bucks too if you tell him your a shop owner or dealer. I send him all my cores and you should too if you decide to purchase one from him, without cores there's no stators.
I've never had one fail so they must be doing something right down there in Alabama.
One thing, if you call him you will have to listen real hard, he has a southern draw that us northerners find hard to understand....lol

Thank you everyone for there input. It usre looks like the poorboy is the most popular way to go. I have been studying the pictures and insturctions. The quesion I have is the top bracket that you need to to grind flat removable? Also do you really need to have a spacer made for the main ully or can you just use washers?

I am thinking that If I decide to do it im might pull off most of the parts before I pickle the bike this winter. thatway I can have almost everything in the nice warm basement to work on.

Thanks again.

check this site. I know is says it's for a 1200 but I don't think there's much difference for the 1000.http://www.gl1200goldwings.com/view...k=t&sd=a&sid=49d9c3b528ca45b21bf6def04d0127d0
