Just thought I'd mention that if anyone has a bike breakdown within a 100-150miles of my place near Tacoma, WA, I have an Diamondback Motorcycle Hauler trailer and would be glad to help with recovery and transport.

I guess I'll have to grease up the door seals on the old Dodge and clamp an outboard to the tailgate...

I'm not all that enthused about the GWRRA, but I do like the listings in the back of the Gold book that has possibly thousands of phone numbers all over the US of members listed by location and a brief bit of data on the kind of help they can provide. If you're travelling a lot, it might just be worth the membership for that.

Sir,

A true gentleman, a great reflection on this site.

I really like the idea of having members' numbers, but still, the logistics of it, especially with security issues on the web, make it hard. BUT...anyone who was willing to help out members passing through their particular area could simply list their "Location" (as Redwing loves to point out), and maybe even start a "sticky" thread for those of us willing to do that. Then, if you're heading out on a trip that, say, takes you through Tennessee, you could look under the "Xenia" thread and find my name, then just e-mail or PM me for my number. No probs.

Oh, I called it the "Xenia" thread because of an ancient practice. In ancient Greece it was common practice - almost a social mandate- to grant a travelling stranger a night in your home, you would be host, he a guest. Then, the guest would return the favor if you were to travel through his province. They did this because travel by night was so dangerous, and this social reciprocity led to better relations and safer travel.

"Xenia" is the host-guest relationship, coming from the word xenos, which means stranger-guest. We need more "stranger-guests" among the Wing community. :)

I know I got a little high-brow there....couldn't help it. I'm a Latin teacher and sometimes the old ways come back to me. :)

Valete omnes,

Jack

I'm surprised and somehow strangely pleased to hear of your vocation Jack. I took two years of Latin in high school, sadly 'agricola est en agros' or similar is all that's left. Seems I should have taken history first, after two years of the old amo amas amat I discovered that the Romans were dead. Well, not being Catholic my burgeoning grasp of that ancient and honorable tongue faded away. Nonetheless it's heartening to think that some of our progeny are still studying and preparing themselves for toga parties in college.

Not high Brow at all Jack, it is only the ignorant, who would mock someone with a good education! I struggle to drag my schoolboy French to the surface, if in France, which is embarrassing, 'cuz I was pretty good at it back in the day.

However, it would be no good quoting Latin to me, if you broke down close to my house, I can hardly read a map in English, let alone translate your location from Latin or Greek.

Valete omnes.... I would hzaard a guess means, clean everywhere?:baffled::goofygrin:

I do think that the principle of the helping travellers bit is very commendable and would be happy to put my name on the list, to give Wingers sanctury if travelling.

Add me to the list if it gets up and running, it would be great if we could start a network for folks on this site, I for one, would be happy to accommodate anyone passing through Croydon area.

Hi Exavid and Pete,

Thanks for the kind words, it means a lot. I really enjoy what I do, and I do my best to keep toga parties to a minimum. :)

Oh, for the record, "valete omnes" is "goodbye all"....but I like the idea of leaving people with the saying "clean everywhere". :grinner::goofygrin:

Well, now I know my first two words of Latin, could you enlighten me as to what a "sticky thread" is? Would it be a good secure way of passing our details on?

I tried Valetes Omnes on Helen, but the house is no cleaner!!

Iguess we havesomeof the broadest ranges of employments on this site, and some would surprise me I bet.

Ave Pete!

Sticky threads are like the Salvage Yard thread, and the various polls. They stay at the top of the forum listing instead of dropping down as new topics are added.

I was wondering about Helen. You do know that a Helen is a unit of beauty? It's said that Helen of Troy had a face that launched a thousand ships. So a milliHelen would be the cause of launching one ship. A microHelen might get a liferaftin the waterand a halfHelen or 500milliHelen would get a pretty good assaut force underway.

Cor, your chancing your arm Exavid! watch out foran attack from 500milliHelen.

Actually, Helen of Croy said, she has trouble launching my a**e into action, let alone a fleet of galleons!!:whip:

You are getting away with it this time cuz of the brown nosing at the start of the paragraph!!:clapper:

Could well be, you'll notice some of our unrepentant members do own those and other brands. Though God knows why!

There is a reason you always see Harley dealers close to the interstate

Great offer by the way

As I'm sitting here eating yogurt with a fork (couldn't find a spoon at work...) I think this is one of the most laudable strings yet. (Even with the milliHelen references.) I've got a fairly decent set of tools, a small compressor and an air bottle, a bike lift, and an all-night parts store only 40minutes away. I've got room if somebody got stranded or even just needed a spot for a night. I am a firm believer in being the good Samaritan. Sadly, having worked in the law enforcement field in various duties I also know a lot about scammers and cheaters and thieves.

I taught my kids to help others and have tried to live as an example. I would like to challenge somebody to come up with some kind of directory or listing wherein members of this forum can list themselves if desired. I'm just not web-savy enough to offer a method to this madness.
