Not high Brow at all Jack, it is only the ignorant, who would mock someone with a good education! I struggle to drag my schoolboy French to the surface, if in France, which is embarrassing, 'cuz I was pretty good at it back in the day.I really like the idea of having members' numbers, but still, the logistics of it, especially with security issues on the web, make it hard. BUT...anyone who was willing to help out members passing through their particular area could simply list their "Location" (as Redwing loves to point out), and maybe even start a "sticky" thread for those of us willing to do that. Then, if you're heading out on a trip that, say, takes you through Tennessee, you could look under the "Xenia" thread and find my name, then just e-mail or PM me for my number. No probs.
Oh, I called it the "Xenia" thread because of an ancient practice. In ancient Greece it was common practice - almost a social mandate- to grant a travelling stranger a night in your home, you would be host, he a guest. Then, the guest would return the favor if you were to travel through his province. They did this because travel by night was so dangerous, and this social reciprocity led to better relations and safer travel.
"Xenia" is the host-guest relationship, coming from the word xenos, which means stranger-guest. We need more "stranger-guests" among the Wing community.
I know I got a little high-brow there....couldn't help it. I'm a Latin teacher and sometimes the old ways come back to me.
Valete omnes,
Jack
Cor, your chancing your arm Exavid! watch out foran attack from 500milliHelen.Silverfox wrote:Ave Pete!Well, now I know my first two words of Latin, could you enlighten me as to what a "sticky thread" is? Would it be a good secure way of passing our details on?
I tried Valetes Omnes on Helen, but the house is no cleaner!!
Iguess we havesomeof the broadest ranges of employments on this site, and some would surprise me I bet.

Sticky threads are like the Salvage Yard thread, and the various polls. They stay at the top of the forum listing instead of dropping down as new topics are added.
I was wondering about Helen. You do know that a Helen is a unit of beauty? It's said that Helen of Troy had a face that launched a thousand ships. So a milliHelen would be the cause of launching one ship. A microHelen might get a liferaftin the waterand a halfHelen or 500milliHelen would get a pretty good assaut force underway.
Don't you worry mate, I show Helen my obeisance at every opportunity!!:cooldevil:, it would be wise for you to show proper obeisance to the Norse beauty every day.
