Odd oil-change situation.

I've gone back using 10w-40.

All is normal agian.

OK, had Mystic synthetic oil 20w-50 for a year.It ranfine but as the 20,000 miles grew so didengine noise. (used Mystic from 58K to 78K)

___ Symptoms:
Clutch out, noise, pullin,none.
Tappets tinkled a little.
A type of "primary chain" whirrring sound.
FELT a slight random knock in the handle bars.
On acceleration, felt sluggish even when warm (20w-50).
Shifting gearstook some energy & was difficult to shift smoothly.

Changed the oil to non-synthetic.Used a cheap house brandof 5w-20 for thefirst flush. I planned a short ride maybean hourto flush the tappets and the followinghappened.
___ Symptoms:
Clutch in or out = no noise.
Tappets the tink was gone.
NO more type of primary chain whirrr, not even a whisper.
Random knock in the bars, GONE.
On acceleration, OODLES OF POWER! (probably the thin 5w-20)
Shifting,seemed to pre-think what gear I wanted & did it without effort.


So I kept this 5w-20 oil in for couple moredays of testing. I could not believe howfast, smooth & quiet it ran. On day 3,I change to 20w-50 using thesame brand ofcheap house oil as the 5w-20. 75%of the originalsynthetic symptoms were back though not quite asbad.

The Wings motor is aclose toleranced machine and with the5w-20it ran like a freshly rebuilt Singer.

Any suggestions as to why it ran so well with 5w-20?
Anyone havesimilar situations like this?
Should we be using 5w-40 or 5w-50 in our Wings?
Pros / Cons?

In my humble opinion, nothing over a 40 viscosity should be used, in an older wing. Unless you live in extremely hot climates, but even then, I would do some testing.

Your own experience seems to show you the same thing. Every engine is different and will react differently to the oil and gas we use. I had 3 different wings and they all had their preferences of oil. Various symptoms. Clutch function, engine noise, engine performance, operating temps, you name it. The same oil acted differently in all three bikes. I think condition of the engine makes a world of difference, as to why this holds true. Sludge build up, wear of bearings and seals, condition of the wiring and connections, fuel system wear and condition.....it all adds up.

Same thing when I talk to friends about their wings. One particular brand, weight of oil acts differently for everyone. Plus everyone has their own style of running, or operating their bikes.

All of this, of course, IMHO.

I agree with William.. 20K is too long

20,000 milesfor a wet clutch engine is far too long. The oil filter takes out most of the clutch fibers but all of the smaller ones (<~20-30 microns) are left in suspension and this doesn't matter whether it is synthetic or dino.... I wouldn't go past Honda's recommendation regardless of the oil I use..


EDIT(7/14): Keep reading about the 8th post down.... the 20k was not a single oil change...

MikeF, you clicked ona lost memory of mine. :cooler:

All my past bike were air cooled which ran great on 20w-50.
All our trucksused 5w-50.
I'm over 50.


(must be a pattern here I'm missing)

Alzheimer's must be setting in... I'll have to remember that. (what's the string on my finger for?):doh:

Good thing this "cheap house grade" 20w-50was the #2 of 2 oil flushings.

I felt I was missing something so Ifigured I'dask fellow Wing'rz this question.I read through that HUGE oil postof 2005 and never read, or skim-read missed,the point of air-cooled motorsneeding thicker weight. That also mighthave clicked my memory.

I usa a non synthetic 20/50 in the summer months in my 1500 and the 1000. Both run quieter and shift smoother with it. As to power I can feel no difference.

I would say that at 20k miles, your oil was done. If just by changing it you noticed a dramatic difference,you've proved it to yourself.I also think 20/50 is too heavy for a wing. I run 20/50 in my Harley, but its air cooled and tends to run hot in the summer.That oil also will shear grade and may get to be 15/40wt when changed. I go 3 to 4k on my old wing and 5k on the Harley. Oil's additive packages don't last forever despite what the mfgr's say.,,

In 20k miles, I've seen 6 oil changes and am working on 7th.

Geeez. I'd love to have known the pH of what came outta that bike. Must have been close to the pH of CocaCola!! :D :D

I used Castrol 10/40 and/or 20/50 in my previous 1990 SE. Had 235,000 miles on it when I gave it to my brother last year. I even ran a little Slick-50 in the crankcase. Never had any problems described in FVM's post.

i use valvoline 10w40 and put some seafoam in about 100 miles before each service flushes nice and easy i have friends that run 20 50 oil, they take alittle longer to warm up and get rollin normally plus i wouldnt run anything over 10w40 anyway its a fluid cooled so you dont have to have the oil so thick if your engine is original and older you could blow it up with the thicker oils

Figured it much easier & cheaperto "ask now" than to "repair later".

Wow, 20,000 miles on one oil change? Thats only 5 oil changes per 100,000 miles. Its just my opinion but, that is way to long between changes. Oil is a huge can of worms on this forum. But I bet most will aggree that 20,000 miles is tooooo long between changes.
