I started out the season with Spector golden4 10/40 after a winter carb and valve job. Ran her 3k miles and changed to Dello 15/40. I've heard good things about Dello and Rotella on this site so I desided to give it a shot. Well she started smoking on only the 1st cold startup of the day and I noticed some tappet noise that wasn't there before the change. On arecent post I read that dello caused smoke on start up and the dude said he changed to Rotella t 15/40 and all is well no smoke. I followed his lead and did the same with only 500 miles on the Dello. Well she still smoked on the 1st cold statup and tappet noise was still there. Well after about 500 miles on the Rotella I changed back to Castrol GTX 10/40 and guess what, no more smoke on cold starts and tappet noise went away. So in a nut shell it has been a costly lesson on oils, 4 changes 4 filters in under 5k miles to learn that old fathful Castrol GTX works the best. In the first 23 of 28yrs I used Castrol and only Castrol and for last 5yrs or so I've gone back and forth with Spectro and Castrol. Both work good but the cost differential makes me like Castrol the best.

grrr, QUITE RIGHT. I'm thinking of my XS1100 again. :doh:

Boy-o-boy, I must miss that bike.



I should have said, "the sound of a dry primary chain".



Guess I better get a littlemore sleep, these "BoomBox vehicles" are getting rediculous around here, all day & almost all night.

Hi Jmcannonball, I was thinking the slick 50 not good for the transmission espeacially the clutch friction plate. Any how please clarify your experiences. Tq

I've been using DELO 400 15W40 in all the four stroke machinesI have for years and never have had a smoking problem caused by oil. My 1500 doesn't smoke unless it's been sitting on it's side stand for a couple days which is a common place happenstance with boxer type engines. All Goldwings will do that now and then. I've tried synthetics a couple times over the years and never saw much effect except for my wallet thinning out faster. My 1500 has 128,000 miles and hasn't suffered from petroleum based oil use. The key thing about lubricating oil no matter what type you use is regular oil changes so the old oil that's been contaminated by combustion byproducts doesn't sit in the crankcase for long times eating at the bearing surfaces. Synthetics can't prevent that. If you're putting on a lot of mileage in a short time then it's safe to stretch out the oil change interval. I don't change oil on a long road trip, I wait until the long riding is over. It's a bike that's used only intermittantly that suffers with old oil. Also if a bike is going to be stored it should have fresh oil.
