While on an extended ride this past weekend, my odometer quit working. The trip meter still works fine. Where should I be looking? There is a device hanging on the left front axle with wires running up into the dash area - I assume this is the pickup for the odometer. Is there a way to test it to see if it is still working?

most probably the gear drive itself gave up the ghost.

Go down to the LHS of the front wheel and take the phillips screw out that holds the black plastic bit to the metal bit. Separate the two pieces.

Now raise the front wheel and spin it. (an assistant helps, or use wood blocks under the engine) The metal bit has a screwdriver-like shaft that should turn. Does it? I'm betting not. Let us know.

The link JWhitmore posted should get you going. As I said there, some of those odometers have plastic gears in them so be careful what you spray. Some cleaners melt plastic.
