If it's anything like my 1100, you'll need nearly 4 quarts.

Hello,

Would be a wee bit under 4 quarts, (on center stand) I found I can use the dip stick to watch how much my 86 takes, I just very slightly overfill the top mark, to allow for the filter.

When the motor is started, it takes the oil up into the filter etc, it is notoriously hard to get a correct reading on the stick when the motor is hot, but generally speaking, it will read, around the low to halfway mark, which is fine.

good luck,

The manual for my 1986 says...

1. Put the motorcycle on its center stand on level ground.

2. Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. Stop the engine.

3. Remove the dipstick (1), wipe it clean, and insert the dipstick without screwing it in. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. The oil level should be between the upper and lower level marks on the dipstick

The specification state 3.4 quarts of oil.

I don't know if there is any difference between 1986 and 1987 as far as oil is concerned. Mine is an Aspencade model.

:waving:I have 3 motorcycle magazines from 1984 with articles and specs for the 1984 GL1200 Aspencade and they all state that the oil capacity is 4.2 quarts. Since the GL1200 was made for only four years they all should have the same oil capacity like the GL1100 which was also made for only four years and they all have the same oil capacity which is approximately 3.4 quarts.
