I just changed my oil and noticed when wiping out the oil filter area what looked like a small crack. It was inside the recessed part where the filter goes above the center threaded post on a rounded part. It almost seemed like it was paint or a layer going to peel. It was very small but definitely not a scratch. Is this a solid piece of metal or is it possible it is a bit of aluminum cracking? I have no oil leaks and the bike runs great. I am worried.

If it's in the rough cast part, not a machined surface it is probably just cast that way.

DaveO430 is correct, the unmachined surfaces of most castings show lines that can be mistaken for cracks.
