If I'm understanding this right, it's been a year since the last oil and filter change? Do yourself a favor and replace it all, oil and filter.

Most likely but the filters are cheap. I have reused the o-ring cause I was lazy and they have sealed. Go ahead and pull the filter houseing all the way off and be sure to line it back up carefully. It has got a locateing tab.

I would change it too. You only rode 1,000 miles in a year?

never had a problem about the oil filter seal. every filter i've bought comes with new orings, bolt and cover. always change them.

If I was going as far as taking the filter housing loose I would go ahead and change the filter too. Just my two cents worth. :)
