Oil Pressure question on GL1500

626 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  exavid
Not a thread on oil, or filter brands.

If the oil pressure is LOW, would the oil light come on? (if there is one). The reason I ask is this: I recently changed to a long oil filter, as opposed to a short one. The engine just doesn't "sound" right. Cant really describe the sound tho. Kinda sounds like my old 1200 on a really cold morning where Startup was "klangy" till the oil warmed up. But my 1500 sounded like that last night on a very long ride. Should I just stay with the short filter? The filter im using is a BOSCH 3323. 14 psi by-pass valve,
anti-drain back valve

thanks

The length of filter should not matter as it is filled with oil. It adds a touch of oil capacity due to increased size, but has no effect on the motor. I assume you partially fill the filter first when you install it?
You might have another issue going on.
And yes, that is what the light does. It should light up when you turn the key on and the motor not running (no pressure).
Wonder if the larger filter stole some of the oil from the engine? jimsjinx
As Mr. Peters said, if the oil light comes on when you turn on the key and goes off when you start the bike the problem is not the filter.
OK, thanks guys, was worried that a longer filter would reduce oil pressure
Nope- it will not affect the pressure.
A lot of people like to use the longer filters as they have more media and can hence hold more dirt. Well, the factory says change the oil what, every 8k miles or something silly like that? I figure if the stock length filter is factory rated to be ok for that many miles, then me changing it every 3k or so is far from running in to a dirt clogging issue. And a bit less dexterity needed to change it. If the short filter gets so much crud in it in one change cycle than I figure I have something to repair.

Sorry. That's illogical.
Sorry. That's illogical.
When "Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt" enters the picture logic goes out the window.
If the filter had a weak spring or lower bypass pressure it could be that the oil is mostly bypassing the filter. The simplest check would be to replace the filter with a Honda OEM and see if the noise changes.
