As I'm sure some of you already know, I've been aimlessly wandering the southwest for a few months now. Well, this week I find myself in Texas. It's not the southwest anymore, but I have to go back home sometime... And, of course, wherever I am I have to find decent motorcycle roads to ride! So, today it was the Twisted Sisters. The Twisted Sisters consist of RR337, RR336 and RR335 near Medina and Leakey Texas. Anyone wanting more information on these roads can follow this link, it's how I find interesting roads to ride when I'm passing through an area.

Here is the link to the main page: http://www.motorcycleroads.com

Anyways, I saw a few very ominous signs along the route so I thought I'd share with the group. Also, I'd like to say that while parts of these roads are an absolute blast to ride, one should use caution. There are many sections of the roads that are not in the best of condition. Most of the reviews I read said that the roads were in great shape, but I think they were written a few years ago. Ruts, and loose gravel were the biggest problems followed by one or two decreasing radius turns just to fool you. As always, a little common sense goes a loooong way....

And, of course, I had to have a souvenir...

I rode those roads in Dec. 2011 and they were fun as I was in the Texas Hill Country which provided some very nice views. I didn't find them any more challenging than the Cascade Mountains in Oregon or Washington State.

The "Sisters" as they are called these days are pretty close by for me... as a result I have ridden them often. While I can attest they are nice... I can also attest that you need to come of a non-holiday weekday. Some totally random Tuesday. Otherwise you will get run over by mindless out-of-town morons, anxious to check "The Twisted Sisters" off the must ride highway list.

I can also attest... there are many, many much prettier rides in Texas.

Wow..... I think I've just been insulted...

Well, I didn't run over anyone. It was mostly deserted. Just a few Harleys here and there.... Other than me, I didn't see any crotch rockets. And, while I've been known to ride at a brisk pace occasionally, I'm definitely not one of the more aggressive ones...

I must admit that I was a little disappointed... This morning I drove north on 16 from Medina in my pickup, and I think that road was much nicer... I may find a place to stay in Kerrville, and ride it this afternoon....

No insult intended... it's just that many folks over ride their abilities.

I agree with your assessment of Hwy 16...

Kerrville lodging... the Super 8 on Sydney Baker at exit 508 is nice...

then in the morning, hop on the interstate and head west for one exit to 505. Get off and head north to Harper... you'll come into town right at Daunnas gas station and country store. Turn east on hwy 290 and head for Fredericksburg. Then just past there... turn right at the KOA and ride down to visit Luchenbach..

Does that make up for any perceived offense?

If you're interested in doing a ride tomorrow, I'd be up for that. Just let me know...

Waiting on the missus to see how her weekend looks before I commit. If it does happen. I would have to say meeting in Luckenbach would probably be my best plan.

From there it's north to Enchanted Rock... east to Austin or south and eastward to my kickin' grounds.

Stay alert... I'll PM you with emerging details.

Dang I'm riding the sidecar rig down to Kerville next Friday, staying Saturday, and heading back Sunday. I'll be lodging in my super deluxe 10' x 14' tent at the KOA.

I agree. 16 is a great little highway and I like it even more than three sisters. Just watch out for deer coming out of blind corners.

Recently, on another forum, I read a ride gone wrong in three sisters. At least this one didn't add another number in those signs.

Have fun out there.

FTA: "Per the Sheriff, they are called out for motorcycle accidents on the Three Sisters at least 2 or 3 times each weekend during the summer. And about half of them result in fatalities. This was one of the more well known turns for accidents."

Wow, that's a lot of fatalities that no one hears or reads about.

I can see how there would be a lot of accidents on those roads. Especially when the tight twists and turns are on the steep grades downhill. The bike doesn't want to slow down so easily, and you have to really get on the brakes like you mean it. I will probably have to replace brake pads at the end of my trip, and I know that I will have to replace the front tire. It's pretty much toast right now.

Part of the problem is the irregular wear pattern from running with the tire low (unknowingly), but the areas that are worn thin and the scrubbing all happened during this trip... (with good pressure. I learned my lesson) Perhaps that is why I feel those ruts in the road so much!

Hey! Greenwood, Indiana.... That's over near Indy, isn't it? I'm sure I've been there several times... Is there a Walmart distribution center near there?

We'll probably be passing each other going opposite directions at some point. I'm in southwest Arkansas right now. Going to go looking for alligators today!
Then, tomorrow or the next day I'm planning on doing some riding. Depends on the weather as I think there is the potential for some bad storms...

If you're going to be riding the Twisted Sisters on your wing, I'd advise you to be extra careful on the steep downgrades. I was riding a sportbike, and it didn't want to slow down. A wing will be much heavier, and doesn't have the ability to lean over as far. At one point I was going around a tight blind curve going down a relatively steep grade and all of a sudden there was a bucket in the middle of the lane, just blowing around... Quite a surprise!
Luckily, I was able to avoid it.

Enjoy your trip! :)

No problem. I figured something like that when I didn't get a PM. It happens to all of us.

I'm glad you liked the fuel injection thing. I've still got to get around to finishing that. Been to busy playing
