I think that mother Honda as well as others should have paint shops as do the auto dealers. The big motorcycle repair training facilities don't even teach body repair. There is always going to be a need for this as we may want to restore or even have a minor or major accident. Here in Vancouver I have found 4 or 5 shops that will paint but are very expensive as they are custom bike builders and the auto body shops want the body parts removed by customer before they will paint.:shock::shock::shock::shock::(:(:(:(:(

It might be because the painted parts get ordered by the dealer, already painted from MH.

I restored an 83 two-tone dark gray 1100 Aspencade and talked the guy at Maaco into doing it. I ordered the pinstripe from Stripeman.com and did that myself. It came out perfect and had $300 in it. My 87 1200 is due out of the paint shop this week, same guy doing it for $250. I took everything appart and took all the pieces there but was worth it to me. I think Maaco is in Canada so might be worth a try.

Yes we have Maaco here and they also want the body parts removed prior to paint. This is my whole point in this post. To find some whith the knowledge of our bikes to be able to remove the body, paint & reinstall. Where I live, we are not allowed to do any work on our vehicles and besides I have not access to a garage or shed or any cover at all.

Too bad you don't have a place to work on it. I think you would be hard-pressed to get a bike shop to disassemble let alone paint it. I agree there should be this service available. You may just have to keep checking till you find somebody. I used this as an opportunity to change timing belts, hoses, all fluids, grease rear spline, etc. Too bad your'e not close, I'd do it for you. Paul

I made a reply to this thread, and lost it....So here is the shorter version....If any of you guys have several hundred thousands of dollars laying around ...Sent it to me and I'll open up a Gold Wing only paint and body shop....

Here is one of the main reasons that Honda dealers won't open up paint shops...If they do then there are at least 4 agency's that get involved into the planing, building, and constant monitoring of all body shops..You have the City, who will look at your plans and if you are not too close to this or that and check the the zoning laws, that says its ok to build one.... Then you meet with the next one...The County and they review what the city said and they in turn hand you over to the State Who gives your request to ......Guess who????? OSHA....Now big brother says yes or no, and they watch you every step of the way from bare ground to finished shop....Everything best be up to codes or no matter how much you spent...You ain't gonna open up.....
This is why a lot of the independent paint shops have closed....We had a Mayco shop here for years.....The Hospital 5 blocks down the road complained about the paint odors in the air....Now that location is a Mexican business strip center....

So if you got the money, I got the time to fight the big 4, if not get Rudy's address and send your wing parts to the guy that painted Rudy's wing...He does GREAT work, as to how much he charges I have no idea....

Yep,cheaper and more profit to make parts and sale them.
Most people want a show room paint job for couple hundred bucks and that dont cover the paint,There are plenty of guys out there that do the work,just may have to search a bit.

If I had a place to do the work, I would not hesitate to do the work myself. I may have to take a lot of breaks because of my health but I do have the ability. But another alternitive is the body shop schools. I have one nearby & was told if I bring in the "tins" he would paint it for 200 bucks + the cost of materials.:cool::coollep:

That's actually how mine got painted but in my case the bike was owned by the instructor of the program. I bought it and got it from him afterward. It raised his asking price a little but nothing like it would have been if I had it done for me. I figure it raised the price of the bike between $1000 and $1500. The work and paint used would have easily exceeded the cost of the bike itself.

I gave him $8500 for the bike and the trailer like you see it and well loaded with everything, including the CompuFire alt and batt.

Think it was worth it?

Angela, i understand what you are saying I have worked for both dealers and independet shops and my own shop. and in all three we did R&R paint .And as already mentioned It is extreamly expensive to do both under 1 roof and The insurance for paint and body shop is as well, in the dealers they most all have there own paint sorces , via factory all ready painted and some use local custom painters for the specialty stuff and in either case it gets expensive. Independent shops some will R&R only but that in its self can be expensive do to labor involved. when I had my shop We did R&R and Had a local painter do some or some the coustomer had some one else do it we did not make a profit on paint just the labor and everyone was happy.Ill bet you that if you scrath around and ask around there is somebody in your area that can do the R&R for you. Best of luck

Yes indeed,we had one of those at the Vo-Tech school and they are very good.Plus helps everyone.That is a great option,maybe you will come across a place you can use because it sounds to me like you would enjoy doing as much as seeing the end results;)

I run a shop, and want the tins, not the bike. Why?

I have room for six vehicles. If one of them is a bike, it needs to pay for its parking. It is displacing a car that I can make triple or quadruple the money on easily. It will take up that whole space and then some, when it is torn down.

Labor. The going rate for insurance on mechanical work is $42/hour...removal and installation.

GoldWings arent just a tank and a couple of fenders and side covers; there is serious labor time in tearing it down, in prepping and paint, and reassembly.

Bring in the "tins", I can work you into my schedule and give you a reasonable price. Bring the bike, bring the wallet.

Oh, and a friendly tip; red colors are running 2X-3X the cost of most any other color, same for 3 stage paints.

I got an estimate from a custom bike painter to do all the parts on my Vulcan 750 for $450. That included the tank, both fenders, and both side covers, in Kawasaki Firecracker Red. This painter has a shop set up in a tin building out in the desert, and thereby bypasses a lot of the laws you would have to deal with in town. He is out in the San Tan Valley area (I believe there is a member here who lives out there. He is a professional, The parts are small, and do not have any scratches that go through the paint. I also did not want it clearcoated, because clearcoat scratches too easily, and it does no good to polish it, the paint is underneath. I'm not a believer in either clearcoat or metallic paint. It all looks great new, but doesn't last long. And you can't bring it back with polish. I have yet to get it done. Shortly afterward, I bought the Goldwing, and it has taken ALL my motorcycle time and money.

I have a house set up for working on bikes and cars, I have a 2 car garage, a 2 car driveway, a place to park 2 cars on the street, a large yard completely enclosed by an 8' block wall in the back, and a 6' block wall in the front, a full length back patio (covered) and a shed big enough to hold 6 average sized bikes and then some. I have replaced the carpet with commercial grade 1/8" thick vinyl composition tile in the living room, and have it set up as a place to work on bikes. When it is 115 degrees outside, I can work in comfort inside where it is 70 degrees. Problem is the GW won't fit through the door, I'm having to work on it outside, so it's only early mornings and late evenings.


Pretty much any bike shop (except a dealer) will remove the bodywork for you, then load it in a truck, and take it to an auto body shop like Maaco. You won't get high quality custom work, but you won't pay for it either. When it is finished, the shop will reinstall it. But it won't be cheap. I have had all the plastic off my LTD, it's time consuming but easy, I would do it for $50 for the right person, and that means doing it right, putting all the hardware in ziplock bags and labeling it. How much a body shop would charge you would depend on surface prep, remember body shops are not in the business of working on ABS plastic, and would not know how to fix it. Maaco won't even do fiberglass. I've had friends with Corvettes, and they had to take them to a Corvette specialist (read expensive) for bodywork.

Scratches? Piece of cake, and whether it is base/clear or single stage, same risks.

If the scratch is completely through base/clear, same deal as single stage - time to repaint or touch up. Single stage has the advantage here, base/clear can be tough to touch up. Lightly sand the area until dull with 1500 grit, apply touch up paint, allow to completely dry, wet sand using 1500 grit wrapped around a piece of paint paddle until it is almost level, polish.

Same procedure for heavier scratches that do not go completely through the clear of base/clear, or completely through single stage.

Light scratches, wet sand with 1500 grit on a paint paddle, polish.

The real trick is getting a feel for exactly how much clear or single stage is on the surface. Go too far, time to paint...

Professionals can work wonders repairing such damage with a spot repair, definitely not a DIY kinda thing!

My preferred materials for scratch work; 3M 1000 and 1500 grit wet/dry, Super Assilex orange {1500grit}, Evercoat Triple Cut compound on a foam pad on a 7 inch buffer.

Got around to finishing the Honda crotch rocket. JFYI, the cost of the paint {color coats only} was $170.

Add to that the repair labor, prep labor, filler primer and clear, any wet sanding and buffing if some trash gets in the clear...and some profit...that is why a paint job costs so much these days.

You'll have to excuse my beat up cellphone camera pictures!
