So I head out to the garage to get ready for a ride. Pearl (short for mini Pearl), as I lovingly call my wing, was sitting there on hercenter stand in all of her glory just begging to be stretched out.I proceed to lower her from the center stand...Now, just so happens that the side stand is down and...just so happens that my left foot isplanted firmly in the exact spot where that side stand will land when Pearl hits the floor. I don't know if any of you have experience a 900 pound bike's steelside stand landsquarely on the nail of your big toe; but, let's just say that unpleasant thoughts come to mind.

Thankfully, the bike's suspension reboundedthe bike off my toe. I gently leaned the biketo rest on the side stand while inintense, agonizing painand was able tostep away to see if my toe was a mass of blood, flesh and bone. Thank goodness I had my shoes on which provided abit of a cushion. Although it was painful and sore for a while,Pearl didn't draw any blood and the nail is still intact. :hovering:

Thing is after a few moments of writhing pain, I couldn't help but laugh at myself. What are the odds? Thatside stand couldn't have landed more perfectly on my big toe.Betcha that won't happen again...

So, watchthe position of your feet when you're lowering your bike off the center stand.I don't really know if you're supposed to or not, but Ialways keep my side stand down when it's on the center stand. I always try to put a little more pressure to the left side of the bike while pushing it off the center stand. I figure if I lose my balance to the left side the side stand will catchit. I sure don't want to lose it to the right...I'd just have to let her go I guess.

Anyway, any ofy'all had this happen? Hope not, cause it sure hurts!

Sorry guys, I posted this on the wrong thread and don't know how to move it to the correct one...

Nope. Center stand down, side stand up here.

No reason to make the bike lunge to the far side while I'm getting it off the center stand.

And you can get hurt that way too...

I just forget to put the sidestand up. I get off and leave it on the sidestand while taking my gear off then promptly put it on the centerstand. Just looked outside at it in the parking lot and Yep the side stand is down.

The ride was good after I waited a bit for the toe to calm down. Couldn't shift comfortably at first but it calmed down and all was good.

I leave the side stand down sometimes when I put it on the centerstand, but not on purpose. It usually leads to the pogo syndrome when I do. How embarrassing. At least the pogo has only been at very slow speeds.
Hope the toe's better.

Sorry about the toe...sounds really painful....

I leave the side stand down when the bike goes up on the center stand....

But I never take the bike off the center stand from off the bike.

I always get on the bike and walk it off the center stand.

Have dropped to many off the right side while comming off the center stand because the weight was farther right than I realized and from off the bike couldn't tell.

Tried being on the right side and managed to kick up the side stand because the bike was moving forward off the center stand, had to yell for the wife on that one.

So, now I just get on the bike and walk it off the center stand every time.

If I put the bike up on the center stand, the side stand does NOT go down. Rule #1 for me.

Why? I just start the engine, swing my body back, and lean forward and engage the clutch and drive off. Piece of cake.

I leave the sidestand down and lower the bike from the centerstand. I like to have it available to let the bike down on prior to boarding. I don't like lowering the bike from the centerstand while sitting on the bike, it just seems to add extra stress to the thing. I do hop the Silverwing down while sitting on it but it is a lot lighter and it's centerstand is as strong as the Goldwing's so the extra stress doesn't risk bending anything. I think my concern about stress on center stands comes from repairing a couple of them.

Yea, I don't like to lower the bike from the center stand while in the saddle. I've gotten good at leverging it down from the left side and prefer to do it that way. Now, if I can just keep my huge honkin feet out of the way... :cheeky1:

I have never and probably will never take a bike off the center stand from anywhere but on the bike... To much of a chance of her going off to the side... I just lean back and give a lil bump forward and feather the front break and she rolls off sweet as apple pie :action:

I do the center stand off either standing at the side or in the saddle.

I have never had a balance problem rolling it off from the side. Guess when you weigh nearly half the weight of the bike, it is a bit easier to convince it who is in charge.

Ain't a whole lot of mass to some of you guys. And the bike knows it too.

Ouch Ouch Ouch. Any part of that 900 lbs on the toe has got to hurt. Glad your toe is ok.

Visiting about sidestands, I never leave mine down when I pop the bike on the center stand. I always dismount the center stand from the saddle.

Another reason I am glad I have a Trike, no Squashed toes from the stand.

That had to hurt like the dickens. Glad it did not break on you.

They showed me at the dealership when I got my 1800 to sit on it and rock it off the stand. I had always previously stood beside the bike and pulled it off the stand, especially my 83 1100 which had a weak mounting point.

I always get on and rock it off the center stand. I also usually have the side stand down. After reading this I might make sure it's up from now on. OUCH!

Yeah, I agree with Doug, i don't use either stand, don't need them,:D but.........don't put the foot down while moving on a trike:shock:really does wonders for flexibility.:cheeky1:

Glad you are able to laugh about it. Sure could have been worse.
