Chrome on plastic usually is not true chrome. They use a process to evaporate Aluminum under a vacumm called vacuum metalizing. It is then clear coated and left to Gods mercy and God can be mercilous to this stuff. You are just dealing with a few microns of metal (1 micron = .00001 c*nt hair). The sometimes flash Aluminum over copper because Copper sticks to certain plastics better. You can use a mild polish and soft cloth but it doesn't work if you are polishing the clear coat and not the metal direct.

Some companies can plate over plastic using real chrome with an electically conductive coating. Cost for a prepared item are around $35 to 40.
