I just had a thought, it does happen sometimes. I wonder if a 1500 switch base would work? They are available.

Okay, I looked at one on eBay and it seems to have the same pattern. Maybe you're on to something, Dave.

One question might be; why does the 8 wire connector only have 7 male prongs?

I suppose that's all it needs. How many does yours have?

I was thinking just the electrical part.
Yeah, I was wondering about the pattern of the contacts in the base. Seems like they'd have to work if the switch pattern is the same. Just my guess.

Can't figure the reason for the connector being different. Mine has eight wires, to and from.

Don't know, I'm just seeing 5 on each.

Yeah, those schematics look virtually identical.

Wish I had an old one to try on for size.

I've decided that, no matter what, the switch is coming out today.
Even if I have to remove the trunk to do it.

Okay, let's get past "simple minded" and go straight to STUPID!
The pic is the switch connector at the fairing. The one that actually comes off the switch.
For some reason, I thought the one in the previous pics was it.

The Fairing is nearly off. Everything but the last 6 bolts.
I have a friend coming over Tuesday to hold it while I pop them out.
The switch will be easy to remove then. And, after seeing that plug, I don't expect it to look good.

It's obvious there has been trouble along the entire length of the black wire. Out of curiosity, I'll be jumping that plug in the morning. With a fire extinguisher close at hand.

For some reason, I can't find the post somebody left for a GL12 switch on eBay. I could use the plug though.

If the switch has the pigtail with the block at the end you can replace both switch and loom blocks and terminals with different ones, wouldnt be standard or plug into Honda ones but would work happily, something like ebay item 151430793986 (sorry not smart enough to post a full link!)

I do have some of the loom left on the '85 parts bike. The two plugs are the same, so I can probably do an exchange and get away with it. I have to look at the switch first and see if it's savable.

You wanna come over and hold the fairing while I remove the last few bolts?... 😆
I'll buy lunch.

Well I've got the fairing off, and the switch out. The base does not want to come off.
Seems like I've read that the key has to be inserted and on the correct position, for it to come apart.
Anybody know anything about that?

Maybe this page from the service manual will help. Ignition Switch; Ignition Switch Disassembly - Honda Gold Wing GL1200D Shop Manual [Page 367]
