Question about weep hole on 83 Aspencade

I was wondering. I ordered another water pump today, and mine is only leakig about 2 drops of coolant every minute of the weep hole off my parts bike. The question is, is any coolant getting ito the oil? I have not drained it yet. (Again)I could have a stuck thermostat, because I cannot see any flow when the coolant drops, so I am going to replace the radiator along with the entire cooling system. Would that cause it to weep? I am going to get to the bottom of this even if it cost me a rebuild job.

David , the weep hole is there to let coolant drip if the water seal goes bad . You may or may not have coolant getting into the oil .



On the inside of the front cover ,where the 3 bolts hold the water pump in place You should have an oil seal . This keeps the oil seperated from the water . If that seal goes bad and the ceramic water pump seal is bad then coolant might enter the oil . When replacing the water pump you should replace that seal as well . I think it comes in the gasket set to replace the water pump .

Coolant from the weep hole is through the water pump shaft seal. The only way it can get into the oil is through the seal on the drive shaft from the oil pump. If the oil seal was bad and the weep hole was plugged then the coolant could get into the oil.

Not true. There are two paths that coolant can take to get to the weep hole. One is the water pump shaft seal, as you mention. The other is the O-ring surrounding the water pump (on the water side). If either of them leaks, coolant will come out the weep hole.

Similarly, if the oil side seal or O-ring leaks, oil will come out the weep hole.

The purpose of the weep hole is to give the leaking fluid a place to exit, to avoid contaminating the other fluid. If the oil seal went bad, and there was no weep hole, the pressurized oil would eventually force its way into the coolant.

If all you are seeing is the occasional drop of coolant out the weep hole, then it's very unlikely that you have coolant making it into your oil.

Just trying to explain in the simplest way why there is no coolant getting into the oil. Didn't do a very good job obviously but it was early.:gunhead:
