sponge grips I find are great for arthritic hands, also a throttle lock is very helpful

also touring foot pegs so legs and feet can be stretched and rested.

stop for a rest, dont try to push on when feeling a need to stop. (dont ask lol)

I find my iso grips a very smooth. Prior to installing them I had a crampbuster and would start using it around 60 miles to allow the hands to relax. I dont seem to have that cramping problem now. Average rides are around 75 miles at a shot so no long term rides.

Tell him to get the carpal tunnel surgery and be done with it..
My hands would go to sleep so bad I couldn't tell if my thumb turned the turn signals on.. I think it helped my arthritis also..

Agreed. A good friend had it done (both wrists) and was very happy with the results.

I had the same problem with my wrists, tried everything there was and NOTHING helped, foam pads, padded gloves, even tried changing the angle on the handlebars.

Tell him to have the surgery! He'll be out of commission for about a week and a half and then life goes on better than it was. I had mine done and never regretted it.

The best thing would be talking him into a six cylinder Goldwing (1500 & 1800). There is virtually no vibration. Also the cruise control eliminates a lot of the need to grip the bike grips.

I would agree that a modified CB750, ( whilst being a lovely bike I am sure) is not the best bike to be trying to get comfortable with those sorts of health issues.
It might be time to convince your FIL to try a Wing.:jumper:

I agree with both the surgery and the goldwing. Even a four cylinder goldwing is less vibration prone than a CB750, but the sixes are great. I rode a Harley (please, let it alone, I have heard it all) and the Carpal Tunnel along with tendonitis made it impossible to ride very much. I bit the bullet got the surgery, and bought a GL1800 and I ride 15 to 20 thousand miles a year now. We all get older, and when this sort of thing takes away from any enjoyment in life, get it F*&^ing well fixed. Life is too short to not enjoy to the fullest.

Warning: Carpal Tunnel repair will cause the loss of about 40% of strength in the hands, but with some rubber ball and hand exercise most will come back in time. Also, the scar is real tender using wrenches for a while, but constantly rubbing them will reduce them to just about flat and will eliminate most of the sensitivity. Being a millwright, both of the above were irritations, but have been overcome.

I had carpal surgery last December. I too was stubborn & waited too long. As a result I will never have any feeling in my fingers again as the nerves were damaged beyond repair. The up side is my hand does not go numb like before. Have your father-in-law talk to a surgon, asap, as he may lose all function of his bad hand permantly by waiting.....-Rich

Bottom line... if you don't get the carple tunnel surgery, it only gets worse, and permanent nerve damage will result in most cases. The surgery is simple, and effective, but once the radial and or medial nerve is damaged, there is no fixing it. I know this for a fact, and my wife is the person who was mis-diagnosed, and the nerves were damaged from not relieving the pressure on the nerves. If the guy won't listen to reason, you are wasting your breath. JMO jimsjinx:?
