Hi guys... Need help... My radio quit during my trip to Motorcycle Week up in NH.

1st, the channel up and down would not work so I had to listen to one station for the rest of the day

2nd, no more music on the one station it froze on... Just static.

3rd, next morning, all came back until we got to the end of the street from the room we stayed in, then, nothing again.

4th... Nothing on the radio since.. Hot or cold,,,Nothing..

Tape player works fine..

This guru needs assistance... :realshocked:

FYI 86 Aspy,,, 30k miles... Mint....

Sounds like the radio tuner has had it. :?

Don't the contacts on these radios give trouble sometimes? It may be worth cleaning them up.

Try cleaning and slightly prying up the contact fingers on the radio plug and socket at Skooter mentioned. Also spray some contact cleaner or WD40 into the handlebar switch controls and give them a good manual workout. A check of the connectors from the switches to the radio would be a good idea too. If all else fails do a search on radio. Someone posted a repair shop that handled these.

Thanks guys.. So far, I've dissassembled the tuner up on the handle bar, cleaned it and put it back together with dielectric grease.. Then, took apart all the connections under the left side pocket, checked them for problems and re-connected them. Next, I'll work on the radio connections on the back under the speedometer...

What's throwing me is that the radio was working, quit and started working again just before it quit... the tape player is fine..

I hope to finish up this weekend so I can ride when the rain stops.. Will keep you all in the loop on what I find..

Thanks again,,,, Renegade...

Let me know if you find the problem. I am having the same problem on my 91 Interstate. The only difference is that I do not have a tape player.

Thank you gentlemen.. I'm very comfortable with mechanical things, but fall on my face when it comes to electrical. I just don't understand it too well..

The radio makes noise and is locked on 90.1 which does not transmit any music, just some shadow talking in the back ground with a lot of static.. Volume works o.k. Just cannot change channels... I'll work on the slider contacts tonight and get back to you.. :D

Bad ground or low voltage

Sounds very much like the connector on the back of the Panasonic radio. This part is notourious for this. You can pull the radio and after spraying the contactor with tuner cleaner use a small screw driver to lift the prongs. Will ususally work great for another 20K.

Good chance, that's a perennial problem with that radio. Do a search in the box above on 'radio' or 'radio connector' and you'll see quite a bit of discussion about it.
