Normally the same antenna is used to run the radio and cb(if you have one). The main lead comes into the fairing underneath the left fairing pocket(or the cassette player if you have one). It connects to a splitter if you have a cb or just to another female lead that goes around to the tuner if no cb.
Still, in the left side of the fairing is the first place to start to check the antenna lead.

You can remove the cb antenna from the splitter box without affecting the radio sound. Bad grounds on the radio antenna is often to blame for poor audio and you should check that first.

i had same thing on my 82 aspencade.i sent radio to sierra electronics mine had cracked board they went all through it. now plays like a new one.

also before you go to far make sure your mute switch is not on...rember radio is in right side farring pocket.what looks like radio on left side is your tuner.

Also when you switch between AM and Fm, just switch the button 1 notch from straight up at 12 o'clock. The first position is for normal reception, the 2nd is for reduced reception for a strong station.

I have an 83 A with ClarionII that would play on the FM part of the radio when I got it but it had no range at all and would not play on AM,turned out to be a bad lead from the antenna going to the radio/cb splitter on the left side of the fairing. I took the splitter out of the system and now the radio plays fine on AM and FM

:waving:What's below the R/H fairing pocket is the AM/FM tuner and the panel on the L/H side is strictly the audio control panel. The clock function is also within the AM/FM tuner assembly.

Sounds like the antenna wire may have just come out of the splitter. Mine ('86 GL12I) did the same thing. Remove the left fairing pocket and locate the wire underneath. Mine had just backed out. Plugged it back in and everything worked great.
