The wire goes in 1st into a groove about an inch up inside the shock. Be sure you put the seal in the right direction.

Do a search for shock rebuilding in the forum search block, and you should get all the information you need. The more you search the more you learn. I have only been on the forum a short while, and everyone is so helpful. Good luck!

Just did mine Saturday '83 1100 Interstate. They go into the shock in this order (Top means as it's installed on the bike):

- Wire Ring
- Guide Bushing (hollow side faces the top of the shock)
- Backup plate A (the one with the smaller diameter hole)
- Seal (hollow side faces the top of the shock)
- Backup Plate B (larger diameter hole)
- Circlip

I used a piece of 1.5" diameter PVC pipe to push the whole thing down far enough for the circlip to seat.

Good Luck!!!
