Hi Folks,

I have just re-joined the biking world after 35years on the side lines.I have an 85 Ltd that reqired new rear wheel bearing.I followed the manual on removal and installation with no problemsbut now notice some thing that looks strange? The wheel seems to be able to move side ways on the axle and the spacer rotates with the wheel rubbing against the brake caliper plate.I keep checking manual to make sure components are in order but it just does not seem right. It looks like additional spacers are missing?

HELP

Welcome to the forum!!

It really sounds like there is a spacer missing. Try looking at a parts fiche and determine if any are missing. Also check to make sure the axle is in the proper place and held securely by the clamp on the left side.

LOL!!!

There are/should be two spacers on the left hand side, one seats into wheel and the other between brake caliper bracket and swingarm, is one of the spacers missing ?

Hi Guys, okay here is the full story. When I bought the bike it came with a spare rear wheel which looked the same. My wheel bearings were shot so I order new ones, when I took apart found wheel was badly worn at bearing opening so Iused spare wheel. I found the spare wheel was very similary but for the wider (50%)stronger wheelbearing on the RHS. installed new bearing to spare and installed. Contacted the previous owner and he said wheelwas from 85 Aspencade so should be same? I have taken photos and may have to make two spacers, one about 1/4" between disc plate to "big wheel spacer" and one about 3/8" betweenswing arm and disc plate. I could take wheel out and measure but I am stuck with this wheel as I installed a new tire also.

double checked manual and no other spacer shown on north American model??

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can the old wheel be machined "true"? If so you may be able to go with an oversized bearing. I don't understand the difference in wheel sizes between 85 Aspencade and 86 LTD. I thought they were the same. Somebody will be along to help you soon. You picked the right forum.

And welcome from Oklahoma.

I wonder if you have the correct wheel bearings? The bearings should be the same width for both wheels. If there's a size difference in the bearings from one wheel to the other I'd order a new set.

Thanks Guys,
I readusted the Caliper on the holding plate so Its tight against the spacing collar I do have, I backed nut off the axle (it was bottomed out on the threads) so larger diameter part of axal was totally in swing arm area(centered with pinch bolt) and I now have a gap of 5/8" between swing arm and brake caliper plate. Outter rim and tire is still centered in frame. Is there a washer with nut on axal?
I checked the "writing" cast on each wheel, all writting the same other than old wheel is an ENKEI and new wheel is a JIL (maybe L is a backward J)
JEFF, I checked the original wheel to see ifI could machine but there is not a lot of meat left around the casing. The "spare JIL" wheel is a lot stronger around casing and 50% wider bearing,I would think it would last a longer? As a noteI had to take the "standard" bearing back to Honda and they had no record of the "bigger bearing butI did pick a new one up locally ($50.00 instead of $10.00 for smaller bearing)
Unless anyone can helpI will get a collar "spacer made up like JOHNO has"so I can drive bike for a few weeks before the snow comes!!

hahaha

I made a new 5/8" wide collar and now installed and all is well!!
I visited goldwingdocs and there is a "how to on rear wheel removal" and they are showing an extra collar but I think its on a GL1100 as there are many differances between one shown and mine?
My spare wheel, could it be from a GL1500? as it is stronger, also found a guy that can install new rubber bushings and machine bearing housing for oversize bearing,so I may repair old wheeland either keep or sale?

just checked the honda parts fiche, one spacer is on the rear brake section (No1) PAD, RR.
43105-MG9-017 (The fiche indicates two fitted but I have one and one of the collar A shown below)1http://www.hdlparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=146778&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1985&fveh=3450

The other spacer is shown on the rear wheel fiche (No2)COLLAR A, RR.

Hope this helps

This home-made collar thing scares me. That bike should have 2 identical spacers on the left, (brake) side of the rear wheel. Anything other than that is wrong and potentially very dangerous.

Thanks guy's,

I see the other spacer, now never throught of looking under brake system drawings (Thanks Johno), I just can not understand why I never had one with the original wheel.I checked and double checked again but no parts were left over. I will order the new collar today, the collar I madeI machined out of solid stainless steel stock so its stronger than the mild steel collar (butIstill want it to be right!!)

Regards

Very happy to hear that, Andy.

The proper spacer is the same size (about an inch long)as the one you have, so if things seem tight with a 5/8" spacer, that tells be the wheel is not seated in the splines correctly.

BTW, I didn't realize you were new here, so welcome to the forum.

Thanks Dennis,

Just checked with Honda and that part is not made anymore. Wheel is fully seated in spline, my spacer is tight (maybe 1/16" could be added before it rubs against swing arm) Anyonehave an idea where I can get a used collar.

I am still confused about the "new" wheel I am using and what its from??? last owner of my bike is no help at all.

On line salvage yard, or e-bay. Yards will be faster probably. It should be an easy part to find...they don't wear out.

Can you post a picture of that wheel?

Back in 'the good ol' days' Honda built the 1200 in 84-85 with an aluminum insert in the rear wheel. The bearings would ride in this insert and eventually wear the aluminum to the point where the bearings would drop out if the wheel was turned upside down. In 86-87 they updated the wheel with a steel insert to hold the bearings so they wouldn't wear like the earlier version.
There was a service bullitin about all this and measurements so you could tell what wheel was off what year.
Those wheels are now discontinued and it sounds like you've got 2 of the earlier wheels. Some machine shops were able to machine out the aluminum insert and install a steel one and then new bearings and it'd work. It's a rare find if you can locate a machine shop that'll do the work. Liability and all that is the most common reason for them to refuse.

Hi Ray,
I think you have found my issue right on!! My replacement wheel does have a steel insert for the wider bearing. WhenI took the old wheel off the bearing did fall out, and this may explain why Honda has no record of this new wheel.
Dennis has asked me to take pictures(which I have) but I am not sure how to post?

My '87 had a bad wheel. Failed in less that 1500 miles. Dealer said "the bearings fell out" when they removed it, so it wasn't just the earlymodels.
