Hi Folks,

I have just re-joined the biking world after 35years on the side lines.I have an 85 Ltd that reqired new rear wheel bearing.I followed the manual on removal and installation with no problemsbut now notice some thing that looks strange? The wheel seems to be able to move side ways on the axle and the spacer rotates with the wheel rubbing against the brake caliper plate.I keep checking manual to make sure components are in order but it just does not seem right. It looks like additional spacers are missing?

HELP

Hi Guys, okay here is the full story. When I bought the bike it came with a spare rear wheel which looked the same. My wheel bearings were shot so I order new ones, when I took apart found wheel was badly worn at bearing opening so Iused spare wheel. I found the spare wheel was very similary but for the wider (50%)stronger wheelbearing on the RHS. installed new bearing to spare and installed. Contacted the previous owner and he said wheelwas from 85 Aspencade so should be same? I have taken photos and may have to make two spacers, one about 1/4" between disc plate to "big wheel spacer" and one about 3/8" betweenswing arm and disc plate. I could take wheel out and measure but I am stuck with this wheel as I installed a new tire also.

double checked manual and no other spacer shown on north American model??

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Guys,
I readusted the Caliper on the holding plate so Its tight against the spacing collar I do have, I backed nut off the axle (it was bottomed out on the threads) so larger diameter part of axal was totally in swing arm area(centered with pinch bolt) and I now have a gap of 5/8" between swing arm and brake caliper plate. Outter rim and tire is still centered in frame. Is there a washer with nut on axal?
I checked the "writing" cast on each wheel, all writting the same other than old wheel is an ENKEI and new wheel is a JIL (maybe L is a backward J)
JEFF, I checked the original wheel to see ifI could machine but there is not a lot of meat left around the casing. The "spare JIL" wheel is a lot stronger around casing and 50% wider bearing,I would think it would last a longer? As a noteI had to take the "standard" bearing back to Honda and they had no record of the "bigger bearing butI did pick a new one up locally ($50.00 instead of $10.00 for smaller bearing)
Unless anyone can helpI will get a collar "spacer made up like JOHNO has"so I can drive bike for a few weeks before the snow comes!!

hahaha

I made a new 5/8" wide collar and now installed and all is well!!
I visited goldwingdocs and there is a "how to on rear wheel removal" and they are showing an extra collar but I think its on a GL1100 as there are many differances between one shown and mine?
My spare wheel, could it be from a GL1500? as it is stronger, also found a guy that can install new rubber bushings and machine bearing housing for oversize bearing,so I may repair old wheeland either keep or sale?

Thanks guy's,

I see the other spacer, now never throught of looking under brake system drawings (Thanks Johno), I just can not understand why I never had one with the original wheel.I checked and double checked again but no parts were left over. I will order the new collar today, the collar I madeI machined out of solid stainless steel stock so its stronger than the mild steel collar (butIstill want it to be right!!)

Regards

Thanks Dennis,

Just checked with Honda and that part is not made anymore. Wheel is fully seated in spline, my spacer is tight (maybe 1/16" could be added before it rubs against swing arm) Anyonehave an idea where I can get a used collar.

I am still confused about the "new" wheel I am using and what its from??? last owner of my bike is no help at all.

Hi Ray,
I think you have found my issue right on!! My replacement wheel does have a steel insert for the wider bearing. WhenI took the old wheel off the bearing did fall out, and this may explain why Honda has no record of this new wheel.
Dennis has asked me to take pictures(which I have) but I am not sure how to post?
