When I switch the kill switch to off my bike doesn't do anything except turn the headlight off when I push the start button..no crank!! Some say it should crank others say no..So would all you 1500 owners go out turn the kill switch to off and press the start button and report back with your year and whether it cranked or didn't..

1997 no crank... for me. BY no crank I mean the starter doesn't turn the engine over..at all.

My '98 GL1500 Aspencade will not crank with the kill switch off and the headlight dims.

My 1998 Operators Manual, page 18 reads: "The engine stop switch is used to stop the engine in an emergency. To operate turn the switch to either OFF position. The switch must be in the RUN position to start the engine, and it should normally remain in the RUN position even when the engine is off."

I thought all 1500s were this way, a step up I thought from my 1982 GL1100. There were a couple of times when I was getting used to that bike when either I had left the switch in the Off position or someone was messing with me. The bike would crank just fine but would not start. That made sense because we normally refer to it as the Kill switch. I like the fact that my 1500 won't do anything if the switch is OFF because if I hit the start switch and it is eerily quiet, I immediately check the position of the switch.

1997 was the first year Honda introduced the no turn over with kill switch in off position.

It was also the first year of the end of the interstate gl1500 and the beginning of the heavier duty Vaulkrie transmission in the gl1500.

I noticed too that on my 93 SE if the kill switch is off and cruise on/off button is on, it takes the light away off the dash, turn the kill switch to run and the cruise on light on the dash comes back on....so if im turning bike over to start it and that light isnt on i know kill switch is off.....

OK so may bike is "normal" with the kill switch off The starter won't turn the engine over.. from 97 on this is how it should be..correct and bikes prior to 97 should crank but not start. All dim the headlight..

My '99 originally did not crank with the kill switch in the off position. But it failed a few years ago and the replacement I purchased on eBay was from a '96. This one does crank in the off position. The only wiring difference I noticed was the contacts for the illumination and the internal lights were not there. (The SE pod did light up before)

:? You all have me wondering now, because I have no earthly idea? I can't say that I have ever used it. I usually kill it by putting the side stand down and then turning the key off.

96SE here. With the kill switch on OFF postions, up or down, the bike cranks.
