Rescued a GL1200 Wing

Ok guys (and gals), I have rescued a wing from the junk yard and am going to try a total restoration. Current ride is an '85 Interstate that is a work in progress. Runs pretty good and looks O.K., but still needs a bit of work to be nice.

But I ran across a Craigslist ad last week for an '84 ASPY for 300.00 or it goes to the junkyard. Seemed a shame to let that happen, so I bought it. Had to drive 100 miles each way with the trailer, but it just seemed criminal to let this go.

SO..., this is going to be an adventure. I will need LOTS of help with this. Have all the manuals and will read first, but I'm sure that much knowledge will need to be sought from the folks here. I'm in no rush, but wife says 3-4 months will be the limit. Get it running or get it sold.

Basics:
Body is in pretty decent shape, and will require a good buffing. Some small parts are missing (lower rear fairing covers, couple of fins)

Forks are blown, (already ordered new seals. Will need new antidive seal sets) Brake pads are toast, and I haven't checked calipers yet. No brake pressure, with a rubber plug in the window hole. New master will be in order I think. Same for clutch master.

Starter turns over, but will need to start with fuel system and filters before trying to make her run. Throttle is disconnected, and one cable tip is broken.

Rear shocks are blown. Don't know if these can be rebuilt, or just have to replace.

This just touches on the issues. There are more. But I just can't stand to see this proud old girl so to parts or the crusher. Only 49,000 on the odometer. Just too many years sitting in a barn.

Will give updates as we proceed. Wish me luck

Mike

sounds like a feverishly good and fun project!..most parts are on ebay

I certainly respect you for wanting to put her back together again. I would hope this is just a "labor of love" for a proud old machine.

It certainly sounds like she is pretty much a donor parts girl right now.

The difference between being a parts donor and a running machine is the owner's attitude and skills.

It's a little early to call this a parts bike. If it turns over you can spray a little carb cleaner down the intake and see if it starts. It probably will and sometimes this trick will get the gas flowing through the carbs.

It did fire for a couple of seconds with gas down the carbs. Tha't one reason I don't want to se her go the way of parts.

You might want to take the wife out for a great dinner and get an extension on that time limit!! Rear shocks can be rebuilt too.

Oh, on that time limit, she did say get it running, not ride able, right? Big difference!
