Reading Dave C's post about what can happen to an old cracked timing belt has sent shivers through me. I'm in the midst of restoring an old wing which has been left sitting since '88. Although it has low mileage showing (less than 8k) I'm leary of the aged condition of these belts, but don't want to pay for new Honda parts. I've seen that Gates makes a T274 timing belt, but am unsure whether it can be bought here in the states. Anyone got any feedback on this? Any other second source tips would be welcome also!
Thanks!
Don ;)

Don't know about that... I was under the impression that the Gates T274 would fit the GL 1000 & 1100 both.

If youll measure one and send the numbers I can go through Gates and get the belt number. Id use Gates only, not a copy. I assume its for a 1500 (88) ?

Storage life max is 6 years, they need to be changed regardless of mileage.

Thanks Hobie,
Looks like it's double or nothin' for me! I saw a kit on eBay, but I'm tryin' to keep from smokin' a "c note" and change for 'em!

I would totally stay away from Ebay belts. You have no clue who made them. At least with NAPA, Gates or Honda belts, you do. Gates.

Thanks Raymond, sounds like good advice and well taken! In the meantime I found a link that has gobs of info on GL1000's and at least some of it will apply to the GL1100's '80-'82. Thanks to Randall Washington for the info made available at his site:

Any industrial supply house can get them, and youll get Original Gates belts, not NAPAs copies. NAPA etc. are famous for making their profits on slightly cutting quality and/or specs to buy a cheaper part. This aint a place to go cheap.

Randakk's got a good site and has always been good about answering my questions. I did buy some of my parts I needed to get the 77 "Wing1" going last summer. I dont think he ever led me astray with what info I got from his site.

I bought the Gates belts at NAPA, Gates wrapper and marked gates on belts.... About $30 each.

I don't know which can be bought in the states but I have a list of alternative belts for the 1100 (I think most came from Steve's main site). They are;

Gates 5119 or T274 Moprod MTB71
Napa250274 Goodyear G1076
Quinton HazellQTB 184

Graham,
Thanks for the list! I went with the Gates T274 and got them in my hot little hands within two days from a local auto parts store. You can bet I'll be storing your info for future reference!

JCWhitney is like ebay in this regard for timing belts. You have no idea who made the belts. Period. JC sells stuff like the belts as Generic. That way you can't get PO'ed when you get some belts from a factory in a country you never heard of.

Raymond,
Yeah, thanks! I guess I'm just old-fashioned, too! I usually like to stick with the name brands. Last time I tried to straighten a valve stem, I just couldn't get a break!

The Napa belts work great, they are made by Gates, perfect fit!

Any Napa auto parts will get them for you!

Don , for some reason I thought you may be talking about an intake or exhaust valve stem. I would hope you wouldn't try to straighten one of them out!
