Mr Newsom was my kids high school principal for a time. He was also the former superintendant of Mansfield (Texas) ISD. He was a good man and active in the community. He will be missed.

GEDDES, S.D. — A Texas man has died in a motorcycle crash in southeastern South Dakota.
The Highway Patrol says 61-year-old Vernon Newsom of Mansfield, Texas, was trying to pass a truck on state Highway 50 near Geddes about 6 p.m. Wednesday when the truck started to turn. Newsom drove into the ditch to avoid a collision, and the motorcycle hit an approach and rolled.
The patrol says Vernon Newsom's 62-year-old wife, Sharon, was a passenger on the bike and suffered life-threatening injuries.

RIP and prayers of course...

I had the same situation happen to me once. The truck I was following was going slow and it looked to me like he was pulling over to the right...he wasn't...he was "swinging out" to the right to make a left turn..with no signals. I had just down shifted in preperation to pass when he started his left turn. A second or two different and I would have been in the exact same situation. Sometimes no matter how careful you are, you can't avoid something like this.

I found a lengthy news article on them. Seems he had purchased a 2006 Goldwing trike. Had made several short trips in our area to become used to travelling on it. He retired from the district at the end of this school year. He and his wife travelled on the trike to Minnesota to attend some education workshop with his friend and current Mansfield superintendent. Then on to South Dakota. This was his retirement celebration road trip. If you google search his name you will find a Fort Worth Star Telegram article detailing more info about his accomplishments for a school district and their growth. As for the grain truck, I know he was more than likely swinging wide appearing to turn right and then left, most likely without turn signals. In my teen years drove and rode the trucks to the elevators with loads. My family being farmers in western Kansas. Very sad indeed.
