Riding in the rain

My 1992 Aspencade came without a radio cover. I bid on one (E-bay) but have not WON the privilege of paying for it yet.



Even though I can see out the window and it is rainingI would still like to go outside and play when I get off of work. Can the Radio/Cassette handle a downpour without its protective cover?



The next most logical question is "Could it even handle itwith a cover? "



I am sure everyone has ridden in the rain.

I have one of those covers but never use it. My bike sits in a garage overnight, but is out all day (I commute to work daily) in sometimes monsoon weather with no ill effects on the radio. It can handle it.

That's pretty impressive, isn't it?

I haven't disassembled the 1500 radio but I have worked on the 1200 Aspy radio and can say that it was pretty well rain protected with seals on all the control knob shafts. It seems to me that the 1500 must have similar protection. I've ridden my 1500 many times in the rain when it wasn't convenient to stop and put the cover on with no resulting damage.

I had a Sony car radio in my GL12 for over 20 years. When I replaced it the radio worked just fine. All buttons etc. worked like the day I installed it new.

Now, if a radio that clearly wasn't intended for an outdoor environment can hold up, I'd think somethingdesigned for a motorcycle should be able to handle a hurricane, or worse.

I never used the cover on my previous 1990 GL1500 or my 1987 GL1200. Clocked over 235,000 on the 1500 and 60,000 on the 1200 and never had a radio problem.

i dont have a cover on mine when i wash it it gets wet like everything else, i take air pressure and blow it out the clock dosent work anymore but its the buttons that are bad, i have no problems when the speakers get damp it sounds alittle distorted but those are original speakers too.... just try and keep it dry that cover is a bad design anyway you have to reach for the knobs anyway trying to hold up a cover and turn the knobs is insane at 70mph...

the covers really more for stopping little hands pressing buttons when the bike is parked up, never used the cover on my 15 and it went through some rain
