I did above, now can't get her to fire at all. I mean she was running pretty good, red line no prob, starting almost always by at least second push of button. I wanted new coils and plug wires. I swear I put her back exactly as she was and nothing.
Dyna Ignition, coils all ohm out great, both primary and secondary. I am stumped.
Any ideas appreciated. :)

not for sure your prob. but i recently had eng. die then no start, turned out to be kill switch as power for ignition goes through switch to coils ect. cleaning is very easy but watch for springs and one ball bearing, wrap with white cloth as you disassemble and clean floor prior to just in case it will help for visibility. i have pics if you need, pm me and i'll send asap:action::waving:

Turns out was Dyna Ignition. Evidently I shorted it out by hooking up the wires to the new 1100 coils. Have put points setup on and it works fine. Dyna is at Dynatek. Much thanks to Dingdong, who put his points setup on as a test.. very nice.

GLad you found the problem , hope it wasnt days of :baffled:confusion . I was going to say the 1000 VS 1100 are totally different spark systems , you've just learned that.:(

Well,, several on here are running 1100 coils on their 1000's. I bought the 83 1100 coils which as I understand are only 1.5 ohm coils.. so maybe i just need a 3 ohm resistor instead of a 1.5 ohm resistor.. any comments.??? Even several on here running 1100 coils with points versus Dyna.. I will most likely try again. Believe it or not.. lol

83 1100 coils are 0.5 ohm coils and as you noted it is not compatable with Dyna ignitions.. also, I think you will quickly burn out points without a ballast resistor..

Hey Jim,
So then can't I just add ballast resistance to the .5 ohm to get it where it needs to be for either points or dyna?? was not planning on running without resistor.
Thanks for the advise!

bottom line, I would expect that you could get the GL1100 coils to work with a points system by adding the resistor, but I think you will have a rather enemic system.

For those trying to understand....

Low resistance coils (of the 0.5 ohm variety) are in this case designed for capacitive discharge ignitions that give a big negative voltage pulse (about -30 volts)instead of grounding one side ofthe coils i.e., instead of just making and breaking the ground (like with points)..

For example, under normal operation at the point of firing, the GL1100 coil sees +12 volts on one side and about -30 volts on the CDI side.. a total of 42 volts across the primary... operating with a points system therecan only be +12 volts and 0 volts, a difference of only 12 volts across the primary..giving less than 1/3 the "umph".. this doesn't mean 1/3 the volts because the coil is designed to be "saturated" so things are not linear.. but it does mean considerably less energy delivered to the spark plugs..

If using a points sytem, you should be using use the 3 ohm coil with the 3 ohm ballast... or in some cases, just a coil designed for the full 12 volts (without the ballast)

Jim,
I would give my one of my little toes to know what you have forgotten! (If you have forgotten anything, which I doubt)
Sincerely,
David
